AHO LA SQUEErEI By Dick Sjoboen GRAHAM, WASH., July 23, 1971 - It looked as though Squire Tomasie (Tri) might pick up his first main event win at Graham Speedway this season, but Emil Ahola (Tri) again saw enough daylight to squeeze out yet another win in Pro TT. Tomasie held the lead for eight laps over Pat Marinacci (Tri) and Ahola, but the eighth lap saw Ahola get by Marinacci and in the north tum of the next lap Ahola broke past Tomasie into the lead. Track record holder Chuck Thielke (Tri) led all the way in the Expert dash. Junior rider Randy Skiver (Tri) had little trouble winning his fourth main event here this season, passing up both Don Noble (H-D) and Mike Hannula (Tri). Randy led every lap except th e first. In time trials Randy took an 18.91 (second only to Expert Squire Tomasie) and the Junior dash saw him lead all' the way. Steve Baker's wins in both the Novice dash and the main event must have seemed easy after fantastic performances at Kent where he took a fourth place in the Combined Jr/Nov. road race, and at Castle Rock where he took a first. The even t drew 74 riders, including 21 Experts (two nationally ranked.) (Results on page 32) Woods Dominates R'eno Speedway By Steve Young RENO" NEV., July 29, 1971 - Reno's third weekly Speedway race was a particular treat to all who attended due to the surprise appearance of Rick Woods. Although the spectacular Woods won almost every event he participated in, there was muchexcitement in all the events. Chuck Hatcher won the Handicap Main by deftly aceing out Woods, but one of his competitors turned in an equally astounding ride. Local reserve rider Barclay Trehal delighted the fans in only his third class A race by holding on to second place until the-last comer. ·Except for closing his eyes at the start and his post-race comments quoting Little Fauss (UI was going faster than 1 ever went in my whole life."), Trehal showed considerable poise in racing with the shoes. The Scratch Main was the most exciting !'lice of the evening with Woods and Dave Gifford battling for ftrst. Woods won, but apparently was pressed hard enough to not wheelie across the finish line as he had been doing most of the evening. Milan Vickers smoothly held off Carl Spotts to take a first place in the Handicap Consola tion. Freddie Ortiz hung on to his slim lead over hard-pressing Mike Corcoran to capture the Scratch Consolation Main. In a special Match Race, the fans were treated to anoth'er dual 'twixt Woods and Gifford: The race was so fast that anyone who blinked couldn't have seen Woods win. Much praise must be given to the people running and preparing the races for their continuing improvement, and to Al Lockett and Gus and Arlene Lauer for their efforts in brin.ging Speedway to Reno.
