Although hot, there was a constant breeze to keep things from getting out of hand. But dry By Ed & Jim Drechsler Photos by Chuck Long PERRIS, CAL., July 17, 1971 - 200 17 riders turned out to test each other's it was, and at crucial times, Jerry Burton, owner of the Perris facility, would apply 2500 gallons of super stuff (water) to the track with miraculous results. Early risers saw Ed Lawson take the 50cc Nov/Am/Ex. class by winning the lint two motos. The third moto seemed to hint of later action in the Open class as Joe Monohan, Gary Edge and Ed Lawson came out of the final sweeper and crossed the finish line as though their fool pegs were welded together. Yamaha rider Scott Smith ripped off the combined 125 Am/Ex. class and ~y Hockie took the 175/200 class wm. The number one lightweight Expert (that's Hockie) went on to set the day's fastest unofficial lap time of 38 seconds while winning the first 250 Expert moto. Bultaco mounted Tom White took the remaining two motos, but not without working for them. In the third and deciding malo, Danny and his Ossa jumped to the lead in front of Tom and held it for the first lap, only to be out·foxed in the sweeper. Danny tried desperately to regain his lead, but was never quite successful Jeff Sexton spent his day demonstrating the art of Maico moving while winning the combined 650 Am/500 Ex. class. J eft switched to a larger Maico and tried to hold school for the 650 Experts, but ran into Sandy Annstrong and his Ascot Triumph. Sandy won the flTSt moto with Jeff coming up from fourth place for a well earned second. The second 650 Expert moto saw Sandy bottled up behind Jeff and Scott Smith until the white flag was waved. Sandy got around Scott and set his sights on Jeff. Jeff led out of the fmal sweeper by 30 feet, but Sandy's Triumph had plenty of drive and gobs of traction - enough in fact to nip Jeff at the wire. Jeff came back for a win in the third moto and second overall. (Results on page 28) OUR ...r.r _.
