Rich still held the lead by a half a mile on the third lap and J .N. had moved up to second and was charging hard. Thor was taking it a little too easy and J.N. moved up to within 100 feet. Someone gave Thor the "close" sign and he turned it on and came in for the win by 50 feet. J.N. took second this time, Patrick was third and Knapp was fourth on a Husky. Jack Kneble was fifth and again Tencyek was frrst Amateur, also on a Husky. "Man, I was sleeping on that third lap", Rich said later. "I really had to get with it when they told me he was coming up on me. You know the year is not over and No.1 hasn't been decided yet. " The Combined 250·125cc Amateur Expert go went off first on the Invaders course at 10 a.m. At the top of the hill a mile out, Duffy Hambleton had the lead with Larry Pfu tzenreuter in second, Tom Poteet third and Jeff Wright fourth. The high point lightweight rider, Pfutz, had the lead on the second lap. Tom Poteet had done a little endo and the hard charging Tom Brooks on a 125cc Carabela had taken second. Charles Saltzman was third and Wright was fourth on a 125cc Rickman. Pfutz still had his big lead on the third lap on his fast Bultaco; Saltzman had moved back into second; Wright had again moved back into the first 125 spot, and that is the way they finished. Hambleton was fourth on a Husky, Eric Jensen was futh on a 125 DKW. Brooks was next on the Carabela and first Amateur went to Terry Glover. Z of the day by a very close margin over Mayes. Brooks was again third; fourth went 10 Rich Marks and fIrSt Amateur went to Kelly Hayes, also on a Harley, his first Amateur win. There was a lot of racing going on all last race of the day on the Ramblers course and it was really hot. All the riders had wet their sweat shirts down and cut holes in the sleeves trying to get some air. A t the top of the hill after the start it was Pfutzenreuter in the lead with Tom Poteet on his tail, but he hit a rock that threw him sideways and put him down, killing his engine. Pfutz still had the lead on the second lap but Hambleton had moved up to second and Wright was third and tnat's the way they finished. Charles Vandervoorde took the first Amateur honors on a Husky, carrying the Prospectors M.C. green. The president of the Chargers M.C., Dave Lewis, was fifth on a Q) Kawasaki Big Jon Hornback, who was leading the Amateur, had to settle for second Amateur because he forgot to safety wire his gas tank and had to hold it on with his knees. The 100cc Am/Ex. had their first race of the day on the Invaders course and it was the start of a good day for Terry Clark and the Harley·Davidson team. Mitch Mayes was right in there battling with Clark. Clark held on and took the win with Mayes second and Cordis Brooks (Hod) third. After that, the battle continued over to the Ramblers course, with Mayes again grabbing the early lead and Clark coming up to do battle.
