Sisco Gear Woe Gives Eierstedt Penton Point lead By Eric Raits IRVINE, CAL., July 18, 1971 Transmission problems snapped a string of two easy wins for CMC Penton Series leader Taylor Sisco, dropping him into a second place tie with Tom Cale and putting a new man in the lead after Sunday's motocross at Saddleback Park. Richard Eierstedt took over as the new leader by a one point margin. Eierstedt won all three of his motos in the 250 Intermediate divisio.n in such convincing fashion and high style he was compared to fellow Bultaco rider Tom Rapp. Cale, sharing second place with Sisco, won his division of the 250 Juniors on a Rickman Metisse. A powdery bermed turn and soft uphill section scrambled finishing orders in the small bike divisions. Barry Porter won the 125 Expert class with a wretched first race. He finished 11 th and then came back to win the next two motos for his overall first. Pat Welsh's steadiness with a second and two thirds was not quite good enough to beat Porter's point total. Two 125 Juniors Chuck Bower (Pen) and David Donato (DKW) were about the only exceptions with the little bikes, taking their respective 125 J unio'r divisions with three wins a piece. The other 125 division of Juniors had the top finishers scrambling to place. Larry Rivas (DKW) won with two fIrSts and a fifth, Matt Roth was second on a Penton with a 12th, first and fourth, and Bultaco rider Sam Lopez garnered third overall with a ninth, third and second. The 100's had the worst of it in the talcum powder hill. Dale Buzza (Bul) won with a pair of flJ"sts and a 13th, Jeff Weber on a Suzuki finished second with a first, second and 18th ahead of John Gronek's steady Hodaka riding. CMC's top fmisher last year, Mike Cr;un beat Maico teammate B. Payne two out of three to take flJ"st place in the 500 Expert class. Chuck Minert showed up on his silver BSA and took home a third place for his efforts. He and Russ Darnell did some back and forth dicing and place swapping for a while with the BSA and Suzuki. Mark Abbatoye (Hus) won the 500 Intermediate class over Val Schmidt (CZ). Roland Rodriguez ended up winnmg the 500 Junior class when Sisco's transmission went out. Rodriguez had two solid seconds and a first. Bill Urban easily won the 250 Expert class with three wins on his Maico. Jon Derhammer placed second with three thirds. Intermediates was a second Bultaco, that was ridden by Rick' Davis. Les Schultz finished third on a Rickman. CZ's figured heavily in the 250 Junior Divisions, nearly filling the top three sports in all of them. Gary Faxon won Division I ahead of the Maico of Donald Curtis and the Bultaco of David Launius. Division II was a sweep for the Czechoslovakian brand. Jeff Harriott won all three motos ror an overall first, finishing ahead of Larry Vejar and Ed Duncan. Tom Cale's Rickman in the third division broke the string, placing ahead of Walt Young's and Steve Bebec's CZ's. Winners of the 125 Expert motos bit the dust at one time Dr another as the top three finishers overall could claim nary a victory among them. Jim Beauchamp (DKW) won with a pair of seconds and a fifth. Mike Garrett (Pen) had a pair of thirds and a second, placing second and Rick Brown (Car) took third with a fifth, second and fourth. The dollar each rider pays for track mainenance when he enters Saddleback Park was nowhere in evidence on the dusty and worn course but it's one of the few games in town and we have to play there. The pit racing is picking up again. A family of pit squirrels from Garden Grove gets our award this week for spraying dust heroically on those who parked far from the course in an effort to escape the clouds stirred by the real competitors. Next race in the Penton Series is this Sunday at Carlsbad, Calif. (Results on page 28) • .aJa Wins again!
