The Novice 250's held their usual destruction derby in the heats causing numerous restarts, several irreparable bikes, and a couple of broken bones. Ron Boley's Yamaha, James Joy's Montesa, and Howard Arcuri's Bultaco survived the main to finish 1·2-3. A day's racing ended shortly after 6 p.m. (a day prolonged by several ambulance holdups) with the 100 Novice Main on the revened program. Jack Arnold skirted around Ron Foley on the second lap and pulled away for the win. Floyd Davis' reworked Honda never could get up steam on the very slippery track and fmished a strong third. By the end of the three laps he was in last place. In the Main Sonny Burres (Tri) took the lead at the drop of the flag and held it all the way. Bill Elder (Tri) had second place until the halfway mark when Joyner (Tri) passed IUm for about a lap. Elder came back strong to regain the second spot. Although the Junior class was missing two of its best riders, Randy Scott and Gary Kapus, they put on one of the best races yet in th is class. Neal Hulet (Tri) had fast time for the J union and won his heat race handily, after Mike Hannula (Tri) went down trying to pass him. Neat finished second in the Trophy Dash which was won by Mike McCall (Tri). Mike just recently started riding the Triumph - he had been riding H·D. Mike had won his heat race and after the dash went on to take fint in the main. This main was stopped early when Terry Nieman and Mike Richardson went down hard in the west comer and were thought to be injured. Both riden were up okay after catching their breath. The Novice class had a smaller turn out of riders this week and some riden made the main for the fint time. Forest Hiner (BuI) had it all his way as he fIrst won his heat then the trophy cbsh and still had sleam enough to win the main event. In the Dash and Main Hiner was being chased by Dave Ditter (Yam), who put on a good race. It looked like he had Hiner a couple of times but it just didn't happen and Dave had to settle for second place in both events. Dwane LaPore (Han) finished third in both the Dash and Main.
