Hateley Snaps Dorsch CoronaStreak Photo by Walt Mahony CORONA, CAL., July 3, 1971 - The fourth weekly Saturday night half mile at Corona drew a capacity crowd that was rewarded with the best racing yet and a barrel of new track records in both the lightweight and big bike classes. Terry Dorsch (Tri) , the red hot running first year rookie Expert went into the night carrying a nine-in-a-row undefeated win streak but carne out without a win in four times to the line. Dorsch's troubles started in the heat race when he broke a primary chain coming off the starting line. It carne after he had posted fast time trial, breaking his own track record. Dorsch, John Hateley and Don Dudek, all Triumph mounted, broke the former one lap track record in time trials. Junior Gary Scott (Tri) defeated the Experts in the opening heat race, breaking the five lap track record held by Dorsch. Chuck Palmgren (Yarn), Bob Bailey (Tri) and Eddie Mulder (Tri) pushed him to the new mark. Hateley, in his first appearance at Corona, took the second heat over Dave Aldana (BSA), Loyal Penn (Tri) and Jody Nicholas (Nor). Don Emde (BSA), also making his first Corona trip, scored in the third heat over Mike Haney and Dudek. Dorsch was given new hope in one of the semi's. Only two riders would transfer to the fmal. Mulder was off the line like a shot and in front, leaving second and last transfer to be decided between three riders. Coming out of the last tum on the last lap Nicholas fell off. Dorsch was hot on the wheels of Dusty Coppage (Yarn) who was holding second. Dusty got too eager coming out of the last turn and bounced off the front straight crashwall, giving a last second openin!> to Dorsch RAfflE ~ ,_.- . The typical Novice battlers at Corona; Steve Nichols (70rl. Scott Brelsford 184yl and Gary Caldwell who zipped through to grab second at the fmish line. Bailey and Dave Smith (Tri) took the other two transfer spots in the second semi. The Trophy Dash was to be another setback for Dorsch and another win for Hateley. Smith was a close second with Terry grabbing off third and Dudek running fourth in the all Triumph rundown. The 15-1ap [mal was th e best to date and a duel all the way for first between Scott and Hatdey. Scott led the fllst 13 laps with Hateley, the red hot rookie, never more than one to two lengths back. Then on lap 13 Scott drilled onto the back straight too hot and John shot through a small opening to take the lead and go on for the win. Dorsch had moved through the pack from the back line early and battled Don Emde for third most of the way before fmally grabbing the show spot on the II th lap. Mulder came up late to also pass Emde and take fourth. The Novice show was also a topper from the beginning between Steve Nichols (Yam) and Scott Brelsford (Yam). The two won their heat races and were only one one/hundredths of a second apart in total lap winning times. Brelsford's heat win time tied his own track record. The fmal was a two man clash from the start with Gary Caldwell (Bul) a momentary challenger in the early laps. Nichols rode a near perfect race and gradually pulled away in the final laps to score his second Corona win and pull even with Brelsford. Each rider now has two main event victories. Ron Powell (Bul) hit the deck twice, flfst in practice and finally in the main event. He walked away from both. Florida's Gary McGoron (Yam) came west for the first time. He worked his way into the final through the semi and then finished in fifth place, back of Caldwell and Carlo Lucia (Suz).
