Nichols Stomps Experts > "3 ..., ~ w Z W Photos by Walt Mahony GARDENA, CAL., July 2, 1971 Experts are ~upposed to do the major winning at all Ascot events. Experts do win at Ascot - in all but the once a month short track races on the quarter mile. The third double-header of the season was presented last Friday night and for the third straight time the Experts were topped. This time it was Novice Steve Nichols (Yam) taking all the marbles and the win in front of a near full grandstand. ...J U > U Here is a rare shot of two of the finest up-.and coming shoes in the country. 4 (70r) leads Junior Gary Scott around Ascot's short track to win the Main. The Experts divided the regulation heat race wins with the Novices with Chuck Hart (H-D) and Frank Gillespie (Oss) sharing with Nicols and Scott Brelsford (Yam). Then the two Novices came back to score in both of the semi's which all front runners must go thro)lgh before going onto the final - according to short track rules. Nichols jumped to the front in the final with Brelsford off to a so-so start. Then Scott became anxious and fell on the far tum. Gary Scott (Bul), the Junior wh 0 had won th e opening short track of the season, was running side by side and right behind Nichols in the early laps. Brelsford got back up but was a lap behind. Both Brelsford and the officials forgot the one lap difference as the young man from the north tried to race Nichols and Scott. He charged in between the two front runners and broke the tigh t duel, actually giving Nichols the edge he needed. Scott was still iigh t there at the finish but the race was really decided by the rider that was a full lap back at the finish flag. Nichols, Scott and Brelsford have each won a short track final to date. Nichols and Brelsford each won a regulation heat race and a semi-final before moving onto the main event. Scott returned home from the East where he has been defeating aU Experts and Juniors weekly at the short track known as Santa Fe Park near Chicago, Ill. The monthly TT that shares the once a month twin bill found first year Expert Terry Dorsch (Tri) scoring his first main event win as a white plate rider at his home track. Junior Rick Newby (Tri) finally solved his "Expenitis" problems and settled down to take second ahead of late charging Ralph White (Tri) who over Terry Dorsch picked up his first TT at Ascot after winning his heat.
