MAMMOTH MTN., CAL., June 19ยท20,
1971 - Even with the motos set at five
laps. this weekend's running of the
annual Mammoth Mountain Motocross
still left a lot of lungs void of ample
oxygen as the air is quite thin at
8000-plus feet.
But the atmosphere never seemed to
bother Dave Rodgers or Bill Clements,
who both put on a fantastic show to
win the 125cc and Open Senior classes
respectively.
Rodgers' Bultaco also wasn't affected
by the height as it continued to blister
the rough course in Saturday's only
Senior class as he took a pair of firsts
and a second.to win overall. Tom Rapp
was second
In the first, his main foe was Rapp,
also Bultaco ntounted. Rodgers was
never able to build more than a 10 foot
lead during the entire race, which is
quite a feat considering the motos lasted
approximately 13 minutes in duration.
[n the second, Gene Cannady (DKW)
upped himself from a fourth in the first
moto and went all the way to win.

Rodgers started slow but picked his way
through from six th to take second a
small distance behind Gene.
Rodgers again won the third moto
with Rapp second.
Both Rodgers and Rapp stuck around
for Sunday's show and entered the
250cc class to take on some of the best
motocrossers on the West Coast. They
continued to show great endurance but
this time young Marty Tripes held the
point often enough to take overall. Bill
