Gennai Spoils Renslow's Return M ,... By Bill Spencer HAYWARD, CAL., June 5,1971 - A new coating of dirt was added to the Hayward Speedway over the Memorial holidays and, while not yet really set, when it is finished it will add to the safety and speed of the track. The safety consideration will be that of increased banking in the corners while the speed will be the ability of the riders to pass on the outside, thus removing the stigma of the groove that keeps riders from attempting to pass in the corners. The first night's activities saw the track in relatively good shape although still a little choppy after being graded and rolled. Bub Smith christened the races with a win in the 650 Expert Main, his first in quite some time. The race also saw a rare spill by veteran Expert Rick Otto; no harm or hurt but an exceedingly rare occurrence. Fred Cziska held up second place over Dan Hughes who barely made the race after a late arrival. The 500 Expert Main was a different feature of the night as the first ,three finishers all were riding Montesas. Pat McCaul borrowed "Arnie" normally ridden by Craig Filmer and won the affair over Rick Hocking, who is normally astride a Bandido. Vic Sloane rode his regular mount out of the Selby stables to third. Gary Vanderpool pulled off an easy win in the 500 Junior Main with a hole shot off the starting grid that left the rest of the pack pulling for second. Dennis Tomberlin finally got that second spot. Mike Renslow returned to the racing scene after a four week layoff due to a broken collarbone and even though it still pains him, he rides to win. He led off the 250 Expert Main and had all in check until District point leader John Gennai pulled out all the stops and let fly. Gennai is definitely one of the most spectacular riders to come on the scene since the days of Jim Rice and AI Kenyon. Gennai outdistanced Pat Hennen with Renslow holding on to third for his first point pick up since early May when he was the point leader. Glenn Thurman came out the winner John Gennai Lower Cycle Hills Tracie Opens By Bill Spencer MORGAN HILL, CAL.,June6, 1971Opening the lower track of Cycle Hills was quite a chore for the Palo Alto M.C. and even though they did not receive a large turnout of riders or spectators, the count of 200 riders kept the day's races fast and just enough to please one and all. District 36 Number One rider and National Scrambles Champ Jim Foley was on hand to watch but not ride as his shoulder separation will keep him out for a week or so more. His attention to the races shows what a great umber One he is, "got to watch the competition" was his comment and watch he did, as in the 250 Expert and 650 Expert, it was arch rival John Gennai the winner in both mains. Gennai has an uncanny ability to ride both machines with as much expertise as anyone man that sticks to one machine. Throwing around the heavy 650 Triumph appears to be as easy as the 250 PurSang. In the heat of the 650 event, Bill Landsborough led it off and after three .laps Gennai dropped underneath the No. 17 rider and they barely scraped leathers as Gennai went on for the win. The main was a runaway with Landsborough an easy second and former Ascot TT star Bruce Anderson working up to finish third. In the 250 Expert run, it was another easy victory for Gennai with Pat McCaul providing much of the excitement as he CYCLE PARK CLARA FOR SANTA Santa Clara police department is donating 115 acres of land to be used as a permanent cycle park. As a result of efforts by the local motorcyclists and patrolmen, the refurbished golf course will open soon, possibly June 27, with a motocross. The course has three lakes and is close to downtown Santa Clara. According to Tim Myer, head of the Motorcycle Racer's association, it is "very quiet". • and Lee Seidel diced for second spot. McCaul would power slide many of the corners and seem to get loose while Seidel would stay straight and hope for a mistake that never seemed to appear. They crossed the finish line in that order with John Hlebo working through crashes to finish fourth after starting last. Mike Kenyon would up a double winner for the frrst time in his short racing career of less than a year. The youngest Kenyon racer took a second in the 500 Jr. Main behind Jim Decker and a third in the 250 Jr. behind Ron Valente and winner Henry Sanchez. Sanchez took an early lead and was never headed while Valente held on for the second with Mike working very hard to take the third. His ability to powerslide out of corners makes him another spectacular rider. Jeff Hlebo is ou his way to a career as a motorcycle racer of note with a great win in the 250 Novice Main over Doug Wright and Scott Williams. Hlebo will have to race against his older brother, John, soon and that should be a great show. Between John and Jeff and brother·in·law Scott Williams, that family has a lot to offer. Craig Rogers won yet another 350 Jr. Main but this time it wasn't quite so easy as Charlie Ivie kept him honest. Ivie followed Rogers' Kawasaki very closely in the heat and when he made a mistake, Charlie tuner's 350 Bultaco was ready and was the winner. Rogers got an early lead in the main and Ivie had to settle for second, his first trophy in over two years after a very bad crash and broken leg at Hollister, Calif. Fernando Sanchez had a terrific battle with Adam Sabedra in the 650 Novice Heat and Main, much to the delight of all those watching. Both riders kept up the hard charging throughout both races and were never more than a few incnes behind one another. Sanchez was the winner in both cases. Tony Gonzales repeated his last Sunday's win at Hollister, this time over Thorton Smith, in the 650 Jr. Main. Young Self can normally be f ound astride a Charley Brown C·Z chasing the likes of Bob Grossi and Brad Lackey, but tonight he just wanted to keep his hand in practice on the flat track_ Third went to Gary Tonda. Alex Jorgensen tripped over from Stockton again and for the third straight week, was the winner in the lightweight Expert run. This week's light turn out of riders made the class a 100/125 Jr/Ex. race but nonetheless, Jorgensen made it three wms in a row. With the accent on youth as much as it is, the likes of Charles Cole is the essence of it in motorcycling. Whe he is of dimunitive size while standing with his fellow riders, he is a big man astride his 125 Yamaha and was the winner in that Novice class over Mike Moore and Bob Hammond.
