Box434,Carpinteria,Cal. 93013 DeSoto Sweeps San Antonio Motocross By Pete Szilagyi SAN ANTONIO, TEX., June 6, 1971 John DeSoto and Jack O'Leary wowed the crowd today at San Antonio Motosport Park. The visiting Californian managed three wins in the 250 class but had to catch and pass O'Leary in all three motos. The fine, new Motosport Park motocross track has plenty of wide, sandy comers and abrupt elevation changes for the Maico go-boys to work out on. In the first moto John passed Jackie as they flew through the air about ten feet off the deck. They rode the next two laps like a pair of Siamese twins until O'Leary lost it in the sandy switchback. A determined Jackie kept on truckin' through the next two motos but that Hawaiian was flyin'. O'Leary would always get a better start than DeSoto, but a momentary bobble or wide slide would permi t the smooth Maico factory·man to pass. DeSoto was not accustomed to riding under the hot (97 degree) South Texas su nand sh ed his fancy. riding gear in order to keep cool. Charles Eckhart rode his Bultaco to a solid third place followed by more tired champ-chasers than we have room to mention. Rocjard Bigley came out of retirement today with a new scooter and new enthusiasm to give Scott Elliot a good chase in the Open class. Superpatriot Elliot aboard his red, white, and blue CZ had to work for first place money. Hard-charging Bigley on a big, red Maico 400 was trying to pass him at every tum. Elliot kept his cool and Richard had to settle for a trio of seconds. Husky rider Jeff Clark, just getting his feet wet racing with the big boys, rode to a creditable third in class. Baby-bore superstar Steve Stackable watched glumly from the sidelines as Gary Bigley was fITst in line at the 125 Expert pay-window. Steve was put out of the running by a recalcitrant ring-ding. Bigley, kin to heavyweigh ts Al and Richard, rode his Yamaha AT-l to three wins in his first appearance since sustaining a broken hand in February. The rest of the field was well spread with Tim Wagstaff (Pen) and Don Oates Inmost eases, the 10ng4!st ~ou'll have to wait for ~ele elothing at Valerian's is twoorthre_ minutes. (Yam) picking up second and third place shekels. Maico scored again as Bob Abbott rode his 250 to a Junior class win. The youngster from the gulf town of Port Lavaca, Tex., let the rest of the Junior 250's know his intentions as he ran away from the pack in all three motos. Former Hodaka pilot Jim Walker grabbed a solid second on a borrowed Husky. The 250 Junior class was a bit sparse today because the faster h~ginners opted for the big coin race with DeSoto. Other Junior winners were Rex Easley and Bill Goss riding Honda 100 and 125's res!:,ectively. John Desoto in Texas. ()~Ut 1001 A eeed-4,Miu ';M."
