N SEPTEMBER Scally's . Sacto ST ;:: '" N N c: .., ::l ~ w Z W ..J (,J > (,J By Bill Spencer SACRAMENTO, CAL., June 4, 1971 Veteran Expert Bob Scally nearly had a clean sweep in his back pocket tonight, as the Solon City Short Track continued its summer series. The Mt. View flash led off from the fastest qualifying heat with a tremendous lead in the heat only to lose it when he mistakingly took the yellow flag for a red flag. This first heat race went to Novice Mike O'Brien with Scally a very close second spot and from that point the fastest man around the 1/4 mile oval. Scally posted the fastest Semi time and led the entire main event for the overall win and 10 points toward the series lead. Scally's win in the first qualifying event with a 1:42:74 kept the other seven at bay and when the heats lined up, he appeared to be right in line for the big race. Starter Pappy Ford let them loose and Scally had it wired, at least until a rider fell and the yellow flew and Bob thought he saw red. He then raised his hand thinking there would be a restart, only to find out that everybody was trying to pass him. He then put on the pressure and came from a distant fifth to finish second and gain a berth in the Semi. He easily won that event and by virtue of beating Russ Powell Semi No.2, by 2 one hundredths of a second, garnered the pole for the 15-lap main. He led that off from the start and, except for O'Brien following him very closely for the first five laps, had everything his own way. On the fifth go-round Novice Pat McCaul and Powell were dicing for fourth when McCaul got underneath and put Powell on the ground. Powell, a veteran short tracker, was very unhappy with this but his hot headiness got him nowhere. McCaul remained upright and finished fourth behind Jeff Hammond, also aboard an Ossa. Fifth spot wen t to Bob Goodman and sixth to Gary Lozano. In the other Semi, Powell played a waiting game on O'Brien and stayed behind the league leading Novice until the last lap and then got a good drive under him to take the lead and the win. At that point, Powell had psyched himself for a good run in the main and when he fell in the main, he was very unhappy. The 10 lap Consolation fell to San Francisco's Nick Theroux aboard a borrowed Montesa that left the Veteran Expert with a long three second lead at the end. Jim Brooks led it off, but succumbed to gear box problems at the half-way mark and was forced to take a third behind Jim Bouchen. (Results on page 24) SUII... fro. The other riders got by him alright and finished with Jones first, Herrmann second and National No. 73 Sonny Burres third. Although one of the track's favorite Juniors was missing tonight (Randy Scott, Tri., was zapping it to 'em at the Louisville National), it was still a good race. Gary Kapus (Yam) won both the Trophy Dash and Main but he had Tony Perella (Nor) right on him throughout the dash. Chuck Voss (Tri) jumped up to take second in the main when Perella went down. Perella had been running second, and finished the race but was in last place. In the Novice class Steve Baker again rode his Yamaha to a double win. He finished first in both the Trophy Dash and Main Event. The spectators were beginning to think the Novice Dash was never going to be run. On the first start, Baker went down in the first corner. He got up but was limping badly. He did get back on the line for the restart during which Ron Olson (Kaw) went down in almost the sam.e place Baker had. The third time out almost was another dud when Larry Goodman (Bul) lost control but gained it again and again almost lost it but managed to stay on his wheels after all. The Novice Main saw Olson down again but back in to fmish last. Baker got a good start in the main and held it all the way. St. Louis, Mo. 63114 (314) 426-6959 By Larry Ulrich BEND, ORE., May 30, 1971 - Riders from four states competed in today's motocross with one trophy going back to California and one trophy going back to Colorado. It finally happened, Randy Limbeck met his match as Keith Nerseth, riding a Maico for A·l Cycle in Eugene, took the lead in all three motos never to be challenged by Limbeck. Limbeck got' unusually bad starts in all three motos with a flrst lap position of lOth and worked his way up to 3rd. In the 2nd moto Limbeck came around in 4th position, only to work his way up to 2nd, but by this time Nerseth had too much of a lead. The 3rd moto was another bad start for Limbeck and by the time he fought his way up to 2nd Nerseth was again too far away to catch. One thing that apparently was bothering Limbeck is that he was riding PoweroJl Performance' 125 Honda and had finally worked past Hawthorne, Calif. live wire, Don Emler for the lead in the 125 class only to have the bottom fork tubes drop off completely, resulting in a very hard spilL This undoubtedly slowed him up in the 250 race. The spectators hope Nerseth comes back for the next event to see him race with Limbeck again. All classes had enough riders to make an interesting race. This rough track is getting a good reputation for good trophies and is oiled and watered for dust control with two big mud holes and a sand trap. With Limbeck out of the 125 race, that left it up to his brother Rick to try to defeat Rickman mounted Emler. In the flrst moto Rick did beat him due to Emler's expansion chamber falling off. However, Emler woh the next two events with Limbeck wishing he had his old DKW that he was used to, instead of the brand new Zundapp. He likes the Rickman, but only had it two days prior to the race. Never the less, Emler gets it on. Next motocross is June 20 with 40% trophies. (Results on paJl:e 24) OAK CREEK RANCH 90 MINUTES TO L.A.
