o N " '" 8? on N . > :; ~ W Z GROSSI'S DOING IT AGAIN.... By John Grout Photos by Racing Photos VALENCIA, CAL., May 9, 1971 Northern Californian rider Bob Grossi, who apparently has grown a little weary of uslip-in-the-slop-motocrosses" which are offered at this time of the year in his immediate lead in the third moto, seeming to have the situation under complete control. But Grossi, while devouring the rear studs of the front two, decided that the time for fun and games had come and gone. Yanking his Husky to a highside attitude, he W ...J U >- U Bob Grossi (9Bl and Mark Blackwell face off. neck of the woods, came back to the ACE sponsored races today at Indian Dunes. After dropping a close first moto decision to a couple of the finest dust kickers going - Jim West and Mark Blackwell - Grossi, the invader, seemed to get a little stiff-necked at his lower California welcome. So, for the final two Open Senior races, he didn't seem to have a problem. West and Blackwell leaped into an involved himself with some kind of a gravi ty-agitating, horizon tal-to-the-track arc of the wide sand sweeper tum. He was ripping around th e crest of near-nothing with more audacity than a "Rebel 500" pilot with a jammed throttle and forty degrees of asphalt backing. When the three racers had sailed from that tum, Grossi held the lead and continued to spit half of the reservation's sand at the other two riders STUNTS UNLI 3 classes 125: (90cc·125cc) 250: (126cc-250cc) Open: (251cc.over) J. But that's not the way it went into the books. In the third moto Rodgers was able to pass five other riders for a win; while the best that a luckless Wilson couId manage, was a six th place finish. Rodgers crossed the line as the day's class champion. Then, returning once again, Rodgers fought his way from behind during the 125 Se.nior to collar Mark Abbatoye, John RIce, Don Emler and Scott Hoffee to become the solid-pocket payee at the wampum window. ... The mini-cycle bunch watched Mike Brown defeat Kenny Alexander. While the Powder Puffs were whipped three straigh t times by young Mary Grigg. The Old Timers were set·upon by Don Withers, Don Untch and Tim Cobb. Ken Zahrt grabbed three wins as he turned back the 100cc Juniors in Division "A"; while Danny LaPorte was the "B" group victor. And again during the races for the 125 Junior "A" gang. Zahrt didn't stop until he had scooped up three straight wins. Jim MacDonald was able to put the same hoax on the "B" Division. . Steve Oliver and Bill Burton were responsible for the 250 Junior victories. While Tom Simpson pulled a grand slam on the Open Juniors. The combat at Indian Dunes on this Sunday will feature a "Backwards Motocross" for all classes. A cash purse will once again go·to the Seniors; while some giant-sized trophies will be awarded to Juniors. (Results on page 26) INVITATIONAL ROAD RACE Cycle Guide Magazine will sponsor a two-day, invitational motorcycle. road race at Orange County International Raceway. Sanctioning the race will be the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Federation of Motorcyclists.
