Junior riders were falling allover the place and before the final series of motos had started, the two fastest Experts for the day had suffered more than their bodies could stand. The 500cc Experts were r.rst on the line, and Husky-mounted Bill Clements ted the charge to the first comer. Maico's rider John DeSoto was several spots back, but wasted no time moving up to second. His hard charge was all in vain; as soon as he caught Clements he was forced out with mechanical woes. With DeSoto out of the way Clements could breathe a little easier and he won the first leg with Rob Norgaard second on a CZ. When the 250s hit the line it looked like the battle between Clements and DeSoto would take up where it left off in the 500 class. Clements again got the better start but DeSoto was so close he could hear every though Bill had. 'Round and 'round they went, Bill out front and John inches away. As Bill was coming out of a high-bermed corner, his back wheel broke over the top and he lost it. John never had a chance to make an evasive move. He crashed into the fallen machine and may have hit Clements. John sailed over the handlebars but recovered quickly and was soon on his way just short of last. Bill was not so fortunate as he had to be carried away on a stretcher. By the end of the day there was no word on Clements but it appeared he might have a broken leg. Marty Tripes moved into the lead, but John soon caught up and passed him. Even though John took over the lead he could not shake c.1arty and his Rickman. John went on to win with Tripes hot on his heels. DeSoto had the second 500 mota wired. lIe had a good lead over second place Norgaard, and Norgaard had a very good lead the rest of the pack. It was once again a DeSoto-Tripes duel in the second 250 moto. For the first few laps it was John out in front with Marty giving chase. Then DeSoto, who has never learned to crash just a Ii ttle bit, did a super smash a 00 a fast downhill section. The tough Hawaiian was up and walking shortly but he had to retire for the day. Tripes went on to win with Maico mounted ~like Cram second. Even before DeSoto was out of the running in the 500 class, Rob Norgaard only needed a second to take the win. Randy Roche took the lead on his Maico at the drop of tu Peters' green flag and led Norgaard all the way until the last lap. Even though Rob could have been content to coast in second and take the enough for him. He zoomed into the lead in time to take the flag and the class cash. Marty Tripes didn't have to work as hard in the last leg of the 250 class and his win here cinched the overall victory for him. Mike Cram was second and Gary H'l-tris was third. Rill Urban screamed to wins in the first two 125c.c Expert matos, and it looked like he would do the same in the final leg. However, his machine jumped out of gear and as he looked at his left to find Jim Beauchamp, Jim passed him on the righ t. By the time Urban got it in gear Beauchamp was too far out front for him to catch. Next week there will be a CMC motocross at Carlsbad, and the following week they will move their motocross show to Utah for the big one at the L-D Ranch 80 miles north of Las Vegas. John DeSoto and Tim Hart will hold a motocross school on Saturday. (Results on page 28) Dancing on the edge of disaster. • .aJa Wins again!
