TITANIUM OUT
Tom Clark, Director of Professional
Racing for the AMA, announced
recently that titaniam will not be
allowed in the construction of frames,
axles, or other parts of motorcycles
used in AMA competition. Investigation
shows that this material has a tendency
to crack in areas where it has been
scratched or dented.
This with the fact that titaniam can
only be welded under ideal conditions,
and by highly trained people with
special equipment, does not make it
practical for common usage, he reports.

SILVERTHORN UPSETS LARSSON
By Allen Greenwood
DEHESA, CA., May 9, 1971 - Bill
Silverthorn delighted a Mother's Day
crowd as he out-dueled fellow Husky
rider Lars Larson for an overall Open
Expert \vio.
In each of Bill's three motos, he was
forced to come from behind. On the
other hand, Lars gave everyone a lesson
on the art of the start. Lars would
position himself on the outside pole,
thus setting himself up for a straight
shot at the fLJ'st turn. It not only puts
Lars out in front, but it forced
Silverthorn to play catch up for the first
several laps of each moto.
Watching the first two motos was like
an instan t replay on television. Larson
would grab a lead and Silverthorn would
pass some slower riders and overtake
Larson in a wheel to wheel battle to the
checkered flag.
With two firsts to Bill's credit, the
final moto shaped up for a possible
Silverthorn hat trick. Lars must have
decided two second place finishes were
enough. The green start flag signaled a
beautiful Larson gate job on the field.
Silverthorn, who found himself in third
place, fought by Curt Smith (CZ).
Larson was determined not to let the
ever-present charging Silverthorn past.
Lars proceeded to ride a faultless final
lap to take the first position.. Overall it
wasn't enough, as ilverthorn's two first
earned him the overall win.
Most spirited rider of the day award
surely must go to Novice 100 rider
James Ryle (MB), who rode over two
laps without his seat - ouch!
Bob Bramlett, the boy from Idaho,
must like it down here. Bob picked up
another trophy in the 250cc Novice n.
Steve Waller captured the 250cc Noice 1
honors.
Jamey "Scotter" Blunt had a good
nigh t picking up another first in the
175-200cc class, and a second place
finish behind Mike DuBont in the 100cc
Amateur-Expert go.
A few Novices are starting to look
Perris Amateur ratings right in the eye,

Little Danny Whitt, age 13, put the
scare in to h is fellow 100 Novke
competitors, showing promise as a
future expert. Mounted on his Honda
Motosport, Danny sounds like Jeff
Smith on your heels. Danny's little four
stroke may have been out horsepowered
by the Hodakas, but he backed his big
sound with a well-placed second behind
Rolland Gi1Jmer.
Somebody, someday is going to make
a 125 Super Expert class for Eric
Crippa. Eric simply powered his way to
another weekly untouchable three-moto
lead. Watch out, Eric, or Puch may
bring back their factory riders!
