" CXl .... DUST, THEFT, CROWDS DAMPEN JUNIOR-AM if ell . > ~ III ~ z ~ u ~ By John Bethea SOMIS, CAL., May 16, 1971 - The promoters had expected 700 riders for the Dealers First Junior-Am, but the turnout was more like 750. However, their biggest surprise was the amount of spectators the "Biggie for Beginners" drew, a whopping 4500 (estimated). The crew responded fairly well to the situation, but other circumstances altered all their planning and put a damper on the day's affair. Saturday night, the van headquarters located at the park was burglarized and some $500 was taken along with all the class breakdown sheets. It was well past noon on race day before this department was completely caught up again. Then came the dust. The usually always visible water truck was rarely seen today and by mid-afternoon, the start-hill dust tossed up by 4.0-50 riders became unbearable. In the second 250 Novice Div. IV running another short, but interesting race took place. One rider got a little upset at the start line and gave the starter a questionable hand·gesture. When the green light showed (the new system for starting here) the rider sped up the hill and went out of sighL However, the starter had seen the gesture and grabbed the black flag and gave it to the rider... three times; and each was met with the rider ignoring it. So, Doug Grant, acting as a patrolman today, was asked to punue and detain the rider. Grant dropped his Ajay into rust and began the_ chase some 60 yards behind. An eighth of a lap later, Grant finally had to d~dge in front of the rider to get him to pull over, whicb made the man quite upset. He jumped off his machine and pushed it at Doug, but it toppled over and ripped the leather covering of his seat as it hit the Ajay's rear axle bolL "It served him right," said Grant later with a smile. Top winner for the day was Ken Zahrt who picked up his share of the big brass for first places in the 125 Jr. Div. I and 250 Jr. Div. I motos. More Junior-Am dates are being planned in the future, with the possibility of a three·way series at different parks. If there is to be any success in these, though, more steps should be taken to keep the dust down. Results not received as of press time, but should appear next week. , Ken Zahrt (right) has something to smile about after winning two classes . . ~ (@ ~ •..........•.....•.•................ : CON LEY 250/360 Down Pipes - $49.95 : TiS MOTORS : 1049 W.
