N DeSoto Sizzles To Lone Star Motocross Victory ~J. .~;y • ." . .p ~ W Z W .J U >U Photo by Dodie Stingley By Janet West HOUSTON, TEX., Jan. 31, 1971 John DeSoto of California on a CZ, the fastest American rider in the Inter-Am circuit, took home first place money in today's race at Cyclesports Park. Noone could stay close to DeSoto after Houston's Robi Holbert, riding a Husky, crashed. Holbert, in the first moto, was on DeSoto's back wheel for several laps before he crashed and injured his hand, keeping him from riding again. In second place was Tim Hart (CZ) arunning mate. of DeSoto's who is also known for speed as well as skill. Hart gave the crowd a good show, but DeSoto was the main attraction. Billy Clements was flown in from California to ride, and would have probably given both DeSoto and Hart a hard time if his Husky had not given him a bit of trouble. Clements was probably the fastest rider, next to DeSoto, that the crowd saw Sunday. Wyman Priddy and Anthony Jones were down from the Dallas-Fort Worth area and Priddy went home' with a fourth place, and Jones with a sixth place. But, it was in the final moto that these two really showed their stuff. Priddy (Mon) leaped out front and took the early lead for two laps with Jones bearing down hard in second while holding off DeSoto. Jones finally managed to overtake Priddy and was out front when, going over the washboard straigh t, he spilled and lost one lap. Priddy again took the lead, but it was momentarily as DeSoto overtook him .just before the big jump. A short while later, a spill by Priddy enabled Dick Burleson to finish second and Hart third. For Burleson, the AMA's No. 1 motocross plater, it was a fair afternoon in taking third overall. In the 250cc Junior class Jerry Boren took rust place with a Yamaha. Jerry is from Irving, Texas, and watching him ride, one wondered why he was riding. with the Juniors instead of the Experts. Houston's usual first place winner in this class, Robbje Esterlein, riding- a Husky, took home a fourth place trophy with Tim Symons on a CZ of Lafayette, Louisjana taking a second and Tony Ebers, of Corpus Christi taking a third. Vincent Villareal, on a Husky, took home a fifth place and Mark York, on an Ossa, a sixth. Both of these boys are Houstonians. In the Open Junior class, Richard Philljps of Houston took first place on his Yamaha, with Mike Murski, on a Husky, coming in second. In third place was Dennis Teeter, on a Husky, also of Houston. Don Prowse of Little Rock, Arkansas, on a CZ, took home a fourth place, Larry Hedges of Galveston, Texas, on a Suzuki, a fifth place, and John Wooley of Fort Worth, Texas a sixth. California Phones: (213) 474-6650 or 879-3350 At a meeting held in the ~A.stroworld Hotel in Houston, Texas, on January 31, 1971, motorcycle dealers from all over the State of Texas met to form a State Dealer Association. The meeting was sponsored by the Motorcycle Industry Council, the national trade association with offices in Washington, D.C. The M.l.C. is making a drive to ()btain motorcycle dealers as Associate Members and is supporting the formation of state dealer associations as an equal part of a program to improve industry organization, Dealers who were present expressed great enthusiasm for the project. Many signed up on the spot. There is a unanimous feeling t'hat the industry must be organized in order to solve such problems as land usage for trail riding, improvement of the motorcycle image, and reasonable legislative requirements. Temporary officers were elected to guide the formation of the Texas Association and its later affiliation with the Motorcycle Industry Council. Henry Brigham of Houston was elected President, Vern Hardwick of Dallas was elected Vice President, and Curtis Terry of fort Worth was elected Secretary-Treasurer. These officers and Eddie Hill, Jack Wilson, Woodrow Leone, Raymond Francis, Stark Leighty and Frank Miller will act as a steering committee to recommend formal organization procedures, Several pro min en t industry figures ~ere present who strongly endorsed the program. These included E. W. Colman of BSA, Inc., Sam Corona of Yamaha International, Don Graves of Kawasaki Motors, Tom Heinjnger of Webco, Inc., Kim Kimball of Montesa Motors and Ray Weser of Harley-Davidson. Those who attended the meeting considered it a most successful effort and are looking forward to the formation of a vigorous dealer association in the state of Texas.
