~ w Z W ..J o >(J THE MINIBIKE NATIONALS By Tom Culp IRVINE, CALIF., Dec. 13, 1970 , Commencing three years of racing, the Soutlrern California' Mjni Bike Association hosted the Miill Bike • Nationals at Saddleback Park. The first outstanding feature was a great deal of organjzation in very professional pits, not to overlook the large turnout of parents sitting in lounge chairs along the main straight. These jumor racers had th e oldsters on their feet with every lap, in the pits helping with tuning and other preparations. and running back and forth to the association t s concession truck. The crowd grew as the day progressed with motorcyclists, out for a day's play, stopping to catch the action, parking their bikes around the track. There were fathers helping and assisting everywhere, offering encouraging words but not pushing or pressuring jumor in any way. A total of 197 entries started the day's 1 I classes with Dave Carlson collecting fast time honors with 40.0, just a little more than one second off his record time. Dave collected five of the six four-foot trophies. Not a bad day of racing, Dave. The 4-6 hp trophy dash got Rod Sebley off on a winning way. He pulled off one class win and a second closing out his racing in Southern Calif., as he will be leaving for Australia with his folk, soon. Other classes found Kelly Sapp winning 6·8 years 1-3 hp. Jim Moore 9·1 I years 1-3 hp, Steve Egli 15 &: over 1-3 hp, Dave Lamb 6-8 years 4-6 hp, Ivan Oden Jr. 9-11 years 4-6 hp, Jerry Daniels 15 &: over 4-6 hp and Zach Barrett 9-11 years 7 &: over hp. The Mini Enduro class found .I eff ,ward winning and also setting fast time for the class with Pop Oden stealing his son's machine and holding off Willy Scams for second. In all, these junior racers collected a lot of golden memories in a great day of racing topped off with large quantities of pop and hot dogs. (Results on page 20) -"'_.... 2073 W. Paelfl.
