I o ACROSS ARIZONA COUNTRY ... en Story & Photo by Jim Brooks r·; N MAMOUTH, ARIZ., Dec. 6, 1970 Arizona now has regular monthly cross country races. The sponsoring club calls this a cross country race, but it is really a cross between a long rna tocross and a short Hare Scrambles. The race course covers about four miles of sandy trails, bumpy dirt roads, slippery down hills and several river crossings. The riders cover this course ~ o ~ w Z W ..J U >- U 15 times for a total of about 50 miles. Jim Breed and Rich Jackson fought it out for first place throughout the entire 251 and over race. Breed on a 360 Montesa finally came out victorious with Jackson (CZ) with a close second, and Ivan Russell third. In the 126 to 250 class, Larry Losey on a CZ was fust at the checkered. There seemed to be some confusion over second, however, but officials fmally held to their original decision of Rich Moon. Bundetta Dettiman was third and Bill Cashman was an undisputed fourth. The 0 to 125 class ended with Jerry Kitchen on a S;1chs followed up by a son and father team: Phillip Batchkiss Jim Breed cannonballs throu9h the splash at the first of 5 crossings. For being a new club the event was well organized, and all concerned had an enjoyable day. The club's first venture was a European Scrambles laid out in the desert behind Jean, Nevada, on a course approximately seven miles in length. There were 102 entrants. The first· group were the Super-Lightweights. Overall first honors went to Danny Davis riding a Sachs. The next group to ride were the Lightweights. Top honors in this Division went to Tony Cook riding a Husky 250, and the last group to ride was the Open class. The Open overall winner was Don Watkins Jr. riding a Montesa. To acquaint everyone with the course, a member of the Boonie Bounders escorted every rider in single me around the course. No passing was permitted on this practice lap. Some places, which were danger mrked, were smoothed out by the riders and new ones appeared in their place. (Results on page 20) Torsten Hallman Racing, Inc.
