First let us say we agree with you 100%, e'xcept for two sentences. "Probably the manufactures, distn'butors and dealers who rake in their profits on. the sale of shorty .mufflers, open pipes and tiny megaphones don't even lscnow that they are cutting their own throats. All th.ey can see is a product that costs a dollar to make and sells for $12.95." We are very much aware of the problem which exists today, in the area of noise. We have spent many hours and dollars developing our Quiet Tone Glass Pak Mufflers. On March 12th we submitted sample of our Mufflers to the Engineering Section of the California Highway Patrol for testing. At the time of testing the only motorcycle available 'was a 650cc Triumph. The CHP won't approve any muffler. They stated that it was quieter than ·the stock muffler and is acceptable as a replacement, that meets requirements of section 27151 of the California Code. On June 17th we submitted the balance of our mufRers' to the ClIP for testing on all motorcycles. To date the CHP hasn't had time to test the balance of our mufflers but we feel confident that they will meet the requirements of the California Code as did our first one. We have also designed a Glass Pak .shorty Muffler. We tested it and found it to be quieter than the regular Shorty Mufflers you refer ,to. When we receive our first shipment of these they will be submitted for testing. In 'the next few months we will be working with the manufacture of our Expansion Chambers to develop a quiet Pipe for the dirt riders. We hope you will realize now that some of us are doing something about the problem of noise. ROCKY CYCLE CO., INC. JERRY COOPER S,,:es Mgr. . BARSTOW TO. VEGAS Another thing I would like to mention concerns litter. We went riding at Red Rock a couple of weeks ago and it really made me feel bad. There were tin cans all over. I think it would be a good idea if some of the clubs in District 37 could get together and clean up the CanS. The people that leave them there don't care if they ever come bal:k, but I do and I'm sure that some others do. So let's get together aI:ld clean up the trash. LYNN WlLSON Canoga Park BIKES LIFTED Tuesday afternoon both of our bikes were stolen by two punks in aU-Haul van and I'd appreciate it if you would publish my offer of a $50.00 reward, no questions asked, for the safe return of either bike ($100.00 for both). Both bikes are Yamahas: DT1B No. 23235 (1969) and RT-1 No. 05511 (1970). I'll be looking for them myself everytime I go to the desert and advise anyone buying a used bike to check the serial numbers ~st. My 300 pounds are not all fat and I'm .plenty mad. Thank you. I own a 450 Desmo and the only way to adjust the ·valve is to pull the upper rocker arms completely out and replace the Winkler caps. FRANK H' KOLWICZ Oxnard, Calif. RESCUE 'RESCUE 3' "Rescue 3" is having a raffle to help pay for their new "Mobil Command Unit"'. The prizes inc~ude a "Mini Enduro" from Yamaha International, a case each of 2 stroke and 4 stroke oil and 6 cartons of FE Plus Additive from Pacer Consolidated Industries. I, as a District 37 rider, hope all the other riders get behind this great group and buy lots of raffle tickets._ It's a chance to help yourself. Thanks. BILL DICK 100's M.C. I I would like to know the address of the motorcycle club that puts on the Barstow to Las Vegas cross country race. I would like to ride in that race but I do not know the date or other information that is necessary if I ani to ride. ERNEST VIRAG Marietta, 111. See November '28 section of Calendar. GOOD CHECK FOR CHASE 'Every year' after the Check Chase, the Checkers are criticized about their miserable race. Well, 1 made the Check Chase this, year and I thought it was one of the grooviest-races of the whole year. As a matter of fact I think it was about the neatest race I have eVer raced, and I have ridden quite a few. It was well organized and very well thought out. . I The only thing that b.othered me was that my little bike ..ouldn't go any faster on those roads. There were some really long fast roads in it. . It was ,a far out race and the , - 'ooPS'TO ERROR I am a weekly Cycle News customer and I would like to inform you on a mistake that was made at Poso Park Oct. 4, 1970. It was in the 250 Junior Division Two. It said that Div. II was won by Don Kalia' on a Suzuki, but that's odd because I (No. 119) John Franklin won and received the trophy. I got a first in moto 1, third in th'e second, and a second in the thirq. I hOJ:1e this doesn't hurt my fIrSt place in the high point trophy series. I also hope you can correct this mistake. 2':J.iUJ'!ti.»ltilti'tfi~·tlittij'fI .1. h till.' Leppan's Arm Saved PANORAMA CITY, CALIF., Oct. 26,197'0 - Robert Leppan is "progressing nicely" reports hospital officials here after an operation in which skin grafts from both his legs were used to repair his left arm, severely injured in a crash at Bonneville Salt Flats Wednesday. . The ex-world speed record holder was flown to the Kaiser Foundation Hospital here last Thursday after doctors in Tooley, Utah, wished to amputate the arm which was caught between the sh~ and the salt after the canopy came off in an attempted record run. Leppan is "over the hump" and it is only a matter of time to make sure infections do not occur, officials report. Doctors predict he will'have 85% use of the arm when it is healed. The accident occurred Wednesday when Leppan's Triumph 650cc Twin broke its swing 'on the front wheel and ,sent the machine into endos. While ten feet off the ground, the canopy broke loose and Leppan's arm was caught underneath while the cycle slid a quarter of a mile through the traps being clocked at 260 mph. The streamliner was pretty well demolished but is defInitely being planned to be rebuilt with Roosevelt Lackey the proposed driver.
