en BRELSFORD !" o .... en u o ~ w Z W ..J () > () Both Mark Brelsford (87) and Gene Romero (3) held one-two positions from start to finish. of ovals to take fifth overall, just ahead of Aldana and behind Palmgren. While this was where the action was, it was ,still not at the f~ont and that's where Brelsford was - holding off two·in·a'row National winner Romero (second). Brelsford grabbed the lead into the first" turn after that start of the Main and never came close to losing it. Teammate Mert Lawwill appeared to be in good shape to give H·D a one·two finish in the Main but his machine began to slowl y drop from third place and last year's Grand Champion finally settled for seven tho The Harley·Davidson factory seemed to have both a great and poor day in the person of Bart Markei. Markel seemed destined to eclipse Joe Leonard's 27 National Championships Record as he cranked his m~chine for a fastest qualifying time of 24.84, setting a new course record. In his qualifying 'heat, he again showed power as he moved into the lead and was holding it well until the f"mal lap when his bike became ill and he coasted into the pits, finished for the day. Jim Rice collected fourth place points but bad to do it the hard way, overcoming a second row starting position after taking a runaway win in the Semi. Amateur stars Rex Beauchamp and John Hateley, each of whom have won four races this year, were never in serious contention during the Amateur event. Hateley, doing well in his heat, was forced out of the Main when he crashed in the third corner, one of many crashes during the day which all proved un-injurious to the riders. Beauchamp made the Main but was held in the rear of the pack throughout. Terry Dorsch jumped to an early Amateur Main lead and looked to have it sewed up until Dom Emde blitzed past him late in the race to eventually win. The national, the second annual here, was proclaimed a Fred Nix Memorial race by the promoters, Mar-Car Inc. Nix, who died in an automobile accident last year, was a native Oklahoman. Mel Murphy, who said she would donate half the profits received from his paintings of Nix to the great riders wife, gave a check to Carol Nix for $630.
