Don Castro (lly) and Dave Aldana (38x) really put on a show in the late stages by 'dicing through the third-sixth places several
times.
OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLA., Oct. 4,
1970 - Don Castro and Dave Aldana
supplied the main event thrills for more
than 6000 onlookers, but it was Mark
Brelsford and Gene Romero who took
home the top spots in the final event of
the 1970 National Championship
Circuit.
Castro and Aldana both caugll t the
eye of the crowd in the last third of the
20-Lap Half Mile National by jumping
as many as three places in one lap only
to have Brelsford, previously a
non-National winner this year, take the
checkered ahead of Grand Champ
Romero. He did it flag-to-flag.
Aldana was pushing hard in the late
stages and had moved his BSA from
seventh to third by the 17th lap. At that
point, however, he was caugllt in a gas
tank-handle bar banger on the outside
of the back straight and fell back while
regaining control.
Castro, on the other hand, had
remained in contention from the start
by running about sixth until lap 16
when he got a good go-around and
passed three riders to take over third
ahead of Larry Palmgren, Jim Rice and
Aldana.
The next lap, however, proved
unfortunate and Castro, who lost a
fly-wheel during a spill in his first time
trial attempt, was caugllt off-guard and
was forced to give up two places. He
relinquished the other position on the
next lap but regained it in the final pair
Don Emde held back behind Terry Dorsch most of the time in the Amateur Main
before pulling out to win.
Bart Markel (4) was moving his H·D well in the first heat before pulling out with
engine trouble. Earlier he had set fastest qualifying time with a track record time of
24.84.
