o :POSO POSTS NEA T MEET ~ Ii' ,; ~ w d >- U By Jac,k LightPOSO PARK, CALiF., Oct. 4, 1970 A beautiful day greeted 169 riders, and a large trowd of spectators here at the Kern County Trailblazers M.C. Motocross Park. Many of those present found plenty of shade trees, and those from cooler climes enjoyed the warm sunshine in which to relax and enjoy themselves. Once agai_n the t "Trailblazers" presented an excellent program, everything well prepared, the area completely dust free and clean. The race course was wet enough to provide a few "mud holes" for those who like it, and the sandy portion was well packed, making for some real quick racing. This Poso Park course demands the ultimate from men and their machines. The day's winners were determined in the usual manner, three motos for each class being run, and wi th little exception, no individual won all three motos. This close 'competitiol). makes for good spectator viewing, and needless to say, each rider is perhaps trying a little harder to build points towards the final tally . Gerald Herrora rode his Hodaka for two firsts and a second, to take top honors in the 100 Junior class, followed by James Baker and his Honda. Allen Garrett accumulated enough points, with two firsts and a third riding his Yamaha in the 125 Junior class, with Ed Fuller with three seconds aboard his Bultaco. Young Bill Grossi brought his Sachs in for third place honors. Terry Clark (H-D) was an exception as he won all three motos in the 125 Senior class. The largest class of the day was the 250 Juniors, which required two divisions. Randall Lewis (227) and his new Bultaco aced out Jeff Little who rode flawlessly on his AJS to take two firsts, but experienced some difficulty in the second moto, thereby losing some valuable points. Mike Anderson also riding a AJS gathered in the third place trophy. Division two was won by Don Kalia with his Suzuki. over Chris Carter and his Maico. All of these races were close and the winners never were in solid, until the final flag was dropped, these smaller motorcycles, ridden by less experienced riders always provide great excitement and show the will to win' is with everyone entered in the events. The 250 Senior schedule was all C·Z for the first three places. Some of the day's finest racing was provided by two "ery fast, and highly skilled riders; each never giving an inch or backing down at any time. Phil Jacobson and John Pavish had the crowd cheering all day. AI Wurtzel and Ken Bonnefm, Husky rider, were always in contention, and waited for a break that might have changed the outcome. The Open Junior was a full class with 36 . riders, and the hard luck award would have to go to two fine riders from the "Off Camber MC" of San Clemente. Teammates Sheldon Schmit and Don Mardon' while leading the last mota tangled their Huskies on top of the hill, each going down with Sheldon being pinned underneath. The traffic was terrific, so Don became a flagman, policeman, blocker, anything else that would help to keep everyone away and safe. His arms must be sore from all the waving that he did, it is good that their "Honey·Bee" black and yellow jackets were able to be seen. They were both up and back in action soon, but could never make up the time and distance lost. The final point standing had Joel C. Kyne and his Maico the winner, foHowed by Layman Gattis, Don Mardon, Sheldon Schmit PATRACO HI-PERFORMANCE EQUIPMENT PO Box 2&11, PailS Verdes Pen., Calif. 90274 e and Jack Wilson, all riding Husqvama bikes. Today could have been called "Dennis Keefe Day". This Expert desert rider from Lancaster, Calif., by placing three solid seconds in the Open Senior class. took home first place gold. He and Bob Grossi, both riding Huskies, put on a real show. These two found a different groove from almost everyone else, both choosing to go high and wide in the sandy sweeper turn, using all the power at their command to gain the lead and maintain their positions. Grossi would have to share the hard luck award along with Don and Sheldon, by vitue of some problem in the frrst mota, the best he could do was gain 12th position. This no doubt spurred him on, because he· came back to take the last two motos from Dennis. Mike Cram (Mai) and Ricky Long (C-Z) m:,-de up the balance of the trophy Winners. The next Paso Park scheduled race is set for Oct. 18. (Results on page 22) Hodlu Mont .. Gre . Mottrcycles Rlckllllln Metlsa. West.ilst.r . S,.,t C,d.
