Nichols in Near Sweep Story & Photos By Rich Hoffman 250cc Sr. ST and 500cc Sr. ST. Joi'.n Isaacs took second in both the 250cc and 500cc classes; Scott Autrey was second in the 12.5cc Class. The best Gary Scott could do was third which he captured in all three short track mains. K & N Yamaha Racing Team of Riverside headed by Steve Nichols, put together their best team effort ever, wirm1ng II of 12 main events and finishing second in seven other. Backing uP Nichols were Scott Smith, Phil McDonald, Scott Autrey, John Issacs and Mike Meyers. . In the Junior Division, ScottSmith was the big winner of the evening taking 4 of 6 malns. K & N teammate, Phil Mc Donald won the relllll1n1llg two. Scott began the evening with a win in the 125cc Jr. TT~ Phil McDonald was second and Jeff Cruzen took third. In the 250 Jr. TT it was all Scott ORANGE COUNTY, CALIF., Aug. 19, 1970- Steve Nichols :nearly made a clean sweep of the senior division at Orange County Speedway, Wednesday evenipg, wirm1ng 5 of 6 main events. Steve was certainiy back in form as only Gary Scott was able to hold him back in the 125cc Sr. T,T. Steve started his w1nn1ng streak in the 250cc Sr. TT as he and Gary Scott began a lap-bylap battle that conttnued throughout the evening. Steve's next win came in .the 500 Sr. TT and again Gary Scott finished second. With track conditions fast and dry the night was fUled with some of the best short track racing of the season. Steve Nichols won the 125cc Sr. ST. Smith'S as he puIIed away from the rest of the competl.tion. Second went to Morris Malone who has been steadily improving each week. Third, almost catching Morris in the last cprner, was Mike Meyers. The 125cc and 250cc Jr. ST events were also won bY Scott Smith with second going ~ Phil McDonald in the 125cc Class. Mike Meyers took second in the 250's. Phil McDoandl, Orange County Speed- way high-POint rider, won both 500cc Junior events. Phil's first win came in ~e 500 Jr. TT as he ea.sUy outdistanced Cary Tanner and Morris Malone who finished second and third respectively. The 500 Jr. ST saw Phil out in front once again with second going to RobbY Mac Ewen. Lanny North was third. (Results on page 26) Horton, Hopkins Hold Troy Opponents Back and J.: ..,,"! Tommy Horton won two main events and one trophy dash Thursday night at Trojan Speedway while riding his new Kawasaki. Horton started out the evening by winning the first qLce of the night, the looTT heat race. He also won the 250 TTand the 250 flat track races while running under the new sponsorship of K & W Products of Whittier. ,- In the looTT Trophy Dash he jumped into the lead at the start of the race and was chased bY Chris Morland but to no avail. Horton was runner-uP in the 100 flat track Trophy Dash when he got off the line first, but was passed by Richard Sweaney on the last lap, who held on for the win. The 100 flat track main event fell to Horton. Bob Sanders (Kaw) was second and Sweaney was third. Horton also won the 100 TT Main Event again followed by Sanders and Sweaney. Horton took the lead in the first turn and was cha1lengeg the entire race bY saDders. He also won the 250TT and 'flat track heat races but only placedf1fth in the 250 TT Main Event. In the 125 class, Dale Hopkins came uP the winner in two main events and one Trophy Dash. In the 125 TT Trophy Dash, Hopkins jumped into the lead at the start kins' Yamaha was a Bultaco's Kovns, who was involved in both the mishaps at the start of the race. Hopkins also yron the 125 flat track main. event with Danny Corbett picking uP second place and Scott Sivadge third. The 250 flat track main succumed to Bultaco rider Larry Taylor. Gary Bultaco rider Larry Taylor. Gary Anderson, also riding a Bultaco, was second with Stan Robergs taking third. Ron Powell won the 250 TT event ahead of Dan Carlton'S Ossa. Gary Anderson picked uP the third spot in this race. Powell also won the 250 flat track TrophY Dash bY passing Rogers on the last lap and holding till the end. Taylor was the winner of the 250 TTdash. Trojan Speedway's next 5o-lapper wUl be held on Sept. 3rd for the 250cc hikes. A $300 purse wUl be at stake along with some K & W products for the winner. Racing takes place every Thursday night at Trojan Speedway with rac1nli starting at 7: 30 on the TT and the flat track course. Toman (Czechoslovakia) CZ 9.39 points', Van Velthoven (Belgiom) Husqvarna 10.28 points G. Wolfink (Holland) Husqvarna 11.19 points H. Hoppe (E. Germany) CZ 1.2: 18 points V. Allam (Britain) Greeves MAICO had two spots in the first six. We like that. And we'll be up there at the top again next year.
