John Beals looked good on his speedy Yamaha long enough to place second in the first moto but was slowed by a crash in the second and developed mechanical problems In the last. Hanging right In there was Bill McCandless who got two thirds and a fourth for a third overall on his Bultaco. - Dave CM started a pattern for the day by winning the first 125 moto on his rapid American Eagle. He then proceeded There were so many 250' s that they had to run two massive elimination motos with the slower half going again In a By Kevin Hill O!: DUVALL, WASHINGTON, June 28, 197(}" tool Hot racing on a cool day was the order of things at this Sunday's motocross put on d while running second behind Clift, seemed to run out of gas only a few yards from the"flnish and had to push his CZ across to salvage fourth place. He ended UP with a fifth overall. The third moto, while still another rout for Clift In fir st, was notable for an outstanding ride by Glenn Sowards who rode his CZ to a very convincing second. However, he didn't fare well at all in the other motos and at the end It was Doug Raines In second overall behind Clift and ahead of Robert Atkins, who had finished in the money consistently and edged ahead of Bob Hettland In fourth overall. Big John Sweatt got off to a good start in the first moto of the 500 class and came around on the first lap with a nice lead. In seventh place on this same lap was Dave "Iron Man" Clift, again riding an American Eagle. By the second lap Dave had moved UP to third place and John had fallen back to fifteenth. Next laP and the American Eagle Ace slipped Into second place behind Husky rider Bert Her. On the fourth and final lap Dave got by to take the checkered flag ahead of Bert and Bill Vermilye on a CZ. The second moto was a real hairraiser as Bill Bevaart gave the troops a big surprise by rocketing his 400 Matco Into an early lead and hung on all the way to take the win ahead of hard-charing Steve Hall who had to sneak by Bob Cooper's Husky to grab second. John Sweatt was fourth over Dave Clift who had to overcome an enormous traffic problem to end UP where he did. Bevaart proved it was no nuke by winning the third moto In convincing Bill Bevaart jumps in front to stay. to win every moto to take first overall In the class. Jon Wadkins put on a good show also by being a fast second in every moto . on his Yamaha ahead of Bultaco mounted Brian Barthrop who dueled all the way with Larry Bossen riding another Yamaha. Ossa rider, Dan Zlock, made aparade out of the 200 class when he won all three motos. Winning the scramble for second was J. Calvin on a Hodaka with a fourth In the first moto and second In the consolation race and the fir st fifteen In each to go again In two more motos. There was no sandbegging though, because finishing positions in the elimination heats counted towards the overall deal. Here again, Dave Clift showed his considerable talent by winning his elimination heat and the following two motos. In the second moto he staved off a challenge by CZ-mounted Bob HettIand and Husky rider Doug Raines who finished in that order. This same moto was a heartbreaker for Lance Christopherson who, fashion. He came by In the lead on the first laP- followed by Sweatt and Hall, then slipPed back to third for one lap only to retake the lead on the third lap. He hung on from that point on and won first place overall on points. It Was on that critical third lap that Steve Hall, then running a close second tp Sweatt, was unavoidably detained by a mudhole resident and dropPed back to ninth in the moto and fifth overall. Dave CM was fifth again after starting somewhere In the tall end of the pack and wbipping through to get his passing practice for the day. His overall points were good enough for second overall ahead of Bill Vermilye who just edged out Bob Cooper who was fourth overall. The next race here at Duvall is setfor July 5th, just right for last minute practice before the Inter-Am at Graham, Washington.
