AMA Cans Female Pro :i!: Col By Ranny Green Riders 'Flip' Over 14-Foot Mountain By Arnold J. Katz BRISBANE, CALIF. July 4, 1970-Itwas 4th of July and there were plenty offtreworks as 140 riders showed uP for the second CMC Motocross at Champion Speedway. And a much improved Champion SPeedway, It whould be noted, as Bill Smith has added some goodies for everyone. One addition is a 14-foot "mountain" half way around the course. Most rlders paused at the top and eased down the steep decline, although in the 250 Jr. race Dave !'{elson tried to "jump and landed on his head. Immediately following the mountain is a series of tight esses each with a large mound of dirt at both the entrance and exit, which cut v1sability and make coming off a bike a painful experience indeed. Some of the most hotly contested racing took place in the 125 Jr., and 250 Sr. motos. In the 125 class, Bill Grossi won the first moto with not too much trouble. However, Billy was involved in a spill with four other riders at the start of the second motor Coming around the first time he was 23rd, and going like he was possessedby demons. The next lap he was llthand stili riding with abandonment. He passed other bikes where most riders said it was impossible to pass, and kept his throttle full OPen long after others shut down for a turn. By the finish he was third I and still moving. When he gets a little stronger he should be challenging everyone around. He certainly maintained the honor of the Grossi family as Bob was not competing here today. In the Senior 250 class, Ron Stockman and Bill Saitzman were at it, hammer and tong as Bob Bowes and Steve Foster nipped at their exhausts. In the first moto. Stockman jumPed out in front with Saltzman close behind. Neither rider could gain an advantage until Saltzman spilled it coming out of the esses on lap three. Bowes and Foster as well as the rest of the pack stormed by. Bill was soon back in it after losing about 10 ,seconds, which is a lot on this course. Bowes, mounted on a bright orange Montesa, took over the role of hound and gave chase to Stockman and at the finish had him in sight. Steve Foster riding a 125 Bultaco made a gallant effort to pick uP third while Saltzman coasted into fourth after overcoming three places. In the second moto, it was Stockman's turn to go down, (in the very same place), as Bill Saltzman's Greeves flashed by. Bob Bowes was having some problems himse!!, finally sorted them out and stormed in for another second behind Saltzman. Stockman, by turning in an exhibition of fine balanced riding managed a third. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• iN STOCKTON l * PENTON - cz HUSQVARNA Coleman·s. 1545 E. Miner Stockton. Ca. 95205 ph. July 1,1970- Debbie Selden, Tacoma's 19-year-old female professional motorcycling aspirant, has been permanently relegated to the spectator ranks this season. Joe Gordon Jr ., representing the American Motorcycle Association, reported today that the AMA has appealed Pierce County Superior Court Judge Robert Jacques' May decision allowing her to ride. The AMA prohibits women to ride in professional events, although they can compete in sportsman (amateur) races. Gordon warns that it will likely be nine months before the case will be presented to the State Court of Appeals, Division 2, at the Tacoma Mall Bulding. Both Gordon and Robert Peterson, Miss Selden's attorney, must write briefs on the case before it reaches the court docket. "The AMA leaders held 'a meeting May 28 and another last month to decide what they would do about the matter," Gordon said. "I received word from an Ohio attorney last Friday, telling me the AMA planned to appeal the decision." Debbie, who has been competing in sportsman events this season, said, "It's k1nda deflating. I sent my check to the AMA about a month and a half ago for a license but I never received any word. "I wanted to ride so badly, particularly at the nationals (in Castle Rock, July 10-12). But now it looks like I'm going to have to be content to work as a mechanic." AMA District Referee Dave Welsh of Tacoma, who is promoting competition at Graham Speedway this season, has plans for getting Debbie some action, however. He is considering putting her in a match race with her boyfriend, Tom Waterson of Enumerclaw, at Graham later this month. It could turn out to be quite an event, since Watterson Is one of the track's leading novice jockeys. Again Stockman came storming off the line, but 3/4 of the way around something broke and that was it for him, for the day, as the dicing now involved Foster and Saltzman. Steve held desperately to first for three laps before Bill sliPPed by at Start-Finish, and was never headed. Bob Bowes seemed to be finding the going a bit slippery and could do not better than third behind Foster. Saltzman was overall winner in the 500 Sr. class as well, with only a modicum of competition being provided by BUl McClinton on a BSA. One of the most, consitent riders of the day was Larry Batistonl, (C Z) in the 250 Jr. class, as he took all three of his motos today with ease. It should be noted that he turned in the same smooth performance last week to win three, also, and now has the envlable record of six straight with a pair of overall wins. I expect we \\ill see him in the 250 Sr. class, soon, to add more spice to that highly competitive grouP.
