As with many Nationals, the Expert Consolation-was one of the exciters of the evening with National Numbers gunn1ng for their last chance at the money. 'The over-eager crowd dived into the first turn and stacked UP. Dave Aldana, though clear of the action, slipped off the turn and fell. With the restart he took advantage of his second chance and ran in the lead from wire to wire. Don Castro, riding wildly to make uP for shifting problems, finished second. Chuck Palmgren got third, setting himself uP as last man in the final. In the Championship, Mark Brelsford blasted into the lead with the same horse power and smooth style he had shown in his heat. Mulder and Aldana trailed distantly, Van Leeuwen moved in on Aldana and passed him, Markel was running strong in fifth, and surprisingly, heat winner Jim Rice was running dead last. 'Then Markel fell, obviously hurting. Romero fell but was back immediately while Markel sat by the waIl, watching the show. SUddenly, Brelsford disappeared from the lead. His XR had begun firing on one, then quit. Mark sat by his bike, obviously saddened by his misfortune with a race heseemingly had in his pocket. By the half way point Markel was feeling better and re-entered the race, attempting to collect a few points and dollars. Mulder and Van Leeuwen were running tail to nose in the lead. Chuck Palmgren had battled into third, and was followed by Castro, Rice, Coppage, Mann, Sehl, Romer!?, and Markel. Eventaully Rice got by Castro. On the final laP Van Leeuwen made a final effort, but Mulder held him in check and they finished as they had run the 25 laps, with Van Leeuwen close to Mulder's rear Vlbeel. Expected Amateur winner Todd Sloan failed to come through when he fell in his heat, losing his transfer to the final, Winner Ed Hermann's only comPetition' was Bob Robinson, and he was no real threat, spotting Hermann's Triumph over 30Occ's with his Bultaco. Hermann rides under the apt guidance of TT specialist Sonny Burres. (Results on page 2'2) _.,-,_. - ........... FE PLUS MEETS THE.
