Major contenders In the ttrst heat race
were Laww1ll, Rall, Bart Martel, and
, Larry carr. Dave Aldana was loolc1Di
very out of tune, and Gary Nlxon wasn't
getting arciimd successfully either. Law.
wtll, Rall, and carr blasted away at the
drop of the flag and held their positions
to the balfway potot. Then Martel moved
by Darr on lap six and took Rall the next
tlme around. Bart obviously meutbusiness, runntng his new motor to his old
rtg1d frame.
On they continued, with Mert to a
secure lead. Then suddeD1y, coming out
at. the final turn, tile Grand National
Champion dropped onto tile tank, attempting to knock down as llttle wtnd as
possible. His motor was dead, and he
coasted across hehtnd traDsferrtng rlders Markel. RalI. and Darr.
The second heat featured Larry Palmgren and Sebl, do1Dg b8.Ifie tar ahead of
tbird ftD1sher Keith Mashburn. Larry
controlled the race tbrougb the ttrst
four laps, but Dave moved ahead on lap
five and began stretchtng his lead. On
laps six and seven. however, he began to
fiOUDder In tile turns, lasing the griP he
had found earller. Palmgren moved by
on lap etgbt and held his narros advantage to the end.
Gene Romero dominated the tbird Expert heat from start to tIn1sh. Beh1Dd
him In a ttgbt knot of riders were Jim
Rice, Frank GWespie, and Mark Brelsford. Brelsford gatned control at. the
situation by begtnn1Dg the long, fast,
graceful, slldtng arcs througb the turns
that he does so well. Followtng Romero
and Brelsford to the last transterrtog
position was Jim Rice.
The first Amateur heat was won by
Harley-mounted Rex BeIInchamp, setting
a scalding pace that bettered Markel's
An unofficial Charity Newsie riders' meeting.
