BERGQUIST TAKES DESERT! Dropouts Aplenty In Super Hot Weather ~ -J U ;:... U By Dick Wright BARSTOW, CALIF. June 21,1970- Larry Bergquist finally broke the bad luck jinx Sunday, wtnning the 100 M.C.'s hundred mUe Hare Scrambles in temperatures that passed the 110 degree mark. After the race, the Bultaco mounted Bergquist described the run as a "real rider's course", adding, "(Rich) ThorwaIdson passed me when lover shot a turn and I'd really have to get on it to even catch uP. And boy, was it hotl" It was already hot when they dropped the banner at 10:00 am. Bergquist had the lead at the smoke bomb, followed ThorwaIdson on the Rickman, and Tom Smith on a .Husky. Then the riders headed out on the first of two fifty mUe loops, which included a lot of dusty trails, a good fast down hUl and a rocky sandy uP hill. . The wives and friends in the pits were getting ready for their return with gas and plenty of water to pour down their backs. The first man through was Bergquist, followed by ThorwaIdson, and Whitey Martino. Everyone was having trouble with the heat and some of the riders had to quit. Bergquist made the second looP a little faster and came in for the win. ThorwaIdson was second, Whitey Martino was third on a Husky, and Mike Patrick was fourth on a 250 Yamaha. Doyle Fields took first Open on a Sonicweld Triumph. The course must have been an Expert type race as the first non-Expert was Dale Brassfield on hts 360 Yamaha. Doyle Mosley was first Novice, while . John Coots took first 125cc class on a Penton. The 100cc class started ten minutes after the big bikes but only thirty-nine Overall winner Larry Bergquist passes by in full flight. Well organized pits are a must in desert competition. This rider gets lots of attention after a long hard ride. would finish llle rough grind. Mitch Mayes had the lead at the smoke bomb, followed by Terry Clark on a Harley Davidson. Coming into the pits Clark had a minute lead, but had to change a plug and lost the lead to Jack Morgan. These two tigers battled it out until Clark droPped out. Jeff Wright took over second place on his Rickman. At the finish line, Morgan pulled in for the win on hts Hodaka running twentieth overall. Wright was second and twenty- fourth overall, whUe Mitch Mayes took third, followed by Cortes Brooks and Jack Froelich. Agai.n., the first eight were Experts, with Doug Winchell the first Novice on a Kawasaki finishing ninth, and Dean DaUey taking second Novice. First girl went to Jan Ditson, finishing twentieth. There were over five hundred and fifty entries, and il turned out to be a good Father's Day in the desert. (Results on page 22) Whose expansion chamber won Baja? Kenyon and Caprio, riding a stock DTI-C fini shed the Baja 4th overall .d 1st 250cc.
