Occasional MX A Success By Steve Young CARSON CITY, NEV. June 7, 1970 - The latest occasional Carson City Motocross was a typical success. The track twisted lIP and down, around and through, and almost inside out. Other than the almost dry water crossing and the dust allowed by the broken water truck, the conditions were ideal. Derrol Brown opened the day with a determined win on his Honda 100 under considerable pressure from Roger Heath's Hodaka. Ken Pulver kept the leaders scurrying In their 100cc Novice event, but was relegated to a close third. The popular 125cc Novice class trophies were hard fought for by David Buckmaster, James Gulbrandsen and Alan Hanson. All three were controlled and consistent,.but Buckmaster was a shade faster on his Bultaco than the other two were. Juan Guzman rode a Yamalui, as apparently all Winnemuccans do, to win the 200cc Novtce race. He was spurred along by Bob Kvam of Carson City, but never let himself be pressured into an oops. By the last moto he seemed to be barely hauglng on, but evidently everyone else was holding on even less. As usual, the 250cc Novice class was 8ullaco ri der in form. the busiest, and It was necessary to run two divisions. 10 the first division, Robert Harshbargur powered his Husky to a fast win over Jerry Sterger and Ben Sanchez. All three motos were close and fast so that first was within reach of any of the four or five leaders. The second division was equally close with another Husky coming out on toP. This one was ridden by Randy McCoy and another Sanchez, Joe, took second. Larry Hicks placed well in all three motos on his Yamaha, but couldn't quite get around for a first or second. The most oulstanding performances were turned in during the 250cc Expert race. Doug Busey eeked out a win on his 250cc Bultaco, but incredible Carl Cranke took a close second on his 125cc Sachs. Cranke won the first moto, buthe couldn't quite pass Busey in the second or third. Busey and Cranke were far out ahead of the pack, so the duel was closely followed by the many spectators running from vista to vista. Cranke was adding more excitement by rldPlg in the Open class on another cycle, and by almost falling on his head on a tricky offcamber jump. The last event, the Open Am/Ex. class, was sparsely populated, but offered the most excitement. The riders were very closely matched, as evidenced by a different order of placing in all .three motos. Stan Barrett took first by being the most consistent finisher. Barclay Trehal, who stilI retains his smooth flashy form after his short mandatory Army career, was forced to settle for an unaccustomed second. The many spectators, including numerous fair dollies, enjoyed the action thoroughiy, and shOWed how pleasing a well-run race can be. They w1IIprobably all be at the Nevada Trailblazers TT Scrambles, June 28, to watch many of these riders, hopefully along with many more, race again for their venerable "brass" .
