Wealher And Racing Hoi AI Caslle Rock ... "" V) By N. A. Williams CASTLE RQCK, WASH. June 6, 1970The day was hot but the evening was cooler and there was a 100 rider turnout for llie TT races. The crowd was not as large as was eJrI)eCted but they were very enthusiastic. Of the 27 EJPert riders to come out, four of them were national numbers. All four of these were In the Trophy Dash - Sonny Burres, Mark Wlillams, Em11 Ahola and Jim Jones. The EJlPert MaIn saw Sonny Burres and Squire Tomasle battllng It out for first place, with Sonny just able to keep Squ1re off unt11 about the thtrd from last lap. Squire tried hard to pass on the 1ns1de of the west turn and bumped handlebars with Sonny, just for an instant, but It was enough to put Squ1re down and out for "the rest of the MaIn. Glen Adams and Mark Williams were battl1ng It out for second place after that and Adams put on a hard drive to get by WIll1ams just before the f1n1sh Une. The Amateur MaIn" was a well ridden race with Chuck Joyner well out In the lead and Ed Hermann a safe second. The big battle In th1s class was for the thtrd-fourth-and fifth places. Pat Mar1naccl f1na1ly got thtrd with Darrel Cotton fourth and Joe Herndon fifth. The Novice Maln JMlS an easy w1n for Gary Kapus, although TOIl\ Sawyer pressed him hard for a time. Kapus' hardest cOll\PStit1on, Randy Scott, bad to drop out of the nighl races after the heats, as he blew his engine at the..!1n1sh of the heat race. June 6, 1970There was an unusually good turn out for the TT races held at the Willow Creek track last Saturday evening with between 70 and 80 blkes and riders " present. On hand were the top riders from the Eureka, Redding, and Oregon area. The practice laps were gruell1ng with lots of .-p1lls. Uofortunately Dave Jackson had to be taken to the hospital with minor injuries after his mishap early In the pre-race practice. This would have been Dave's first TT race. Gordon Koonley after his second sp1l1 found It necessary to drop out of the Main due to a hand Injury. Gary Thompson on a Yamaha gained an early lead In the 250cc Amateur event, managing to hang on to It to capture first place. Suzuki mounted Gary Cooper, back with us for the first time after two years In the Marine Corps, also took and held the second place spot early In the race. The real battle was for thtrd and some hard luck for David Cherry after fighting hard to get and hold onto third position. He went down some twenty-five yards from the f1nlsh Une losing thtrd to Martin Plumm. A real tough break for Cherry. Probably the most hair-raising event of the day was the 250cc EJlPert MaIn. Excitement mounted as the race bad to be restarted three times due to over anxlous riders. Ftnally off to a good start, Ray Beck on a Kawasakl, bad just taken over the lead going Into the second lap when he suddenly went down on the llttle switch-back resulting In a cha1n reaction that brought down all the bikes In the race. With the excitement over, and everyone apparently able, the race was resumed. Gordon Khunle took the lead for a whlle then dropped back and f1na1ly out of the race because of his hand Injury. Beck and Whitey Marks cont1nued to battle It out for the lead with Beck coming In first, Marks taklng second and Ed Nielson flnlshtng third. There was plenty of excltement In the 25lcc Open Amateur-EJlPert class too. With Harvey Cruz riding the only big bike In the race, a 650cc Triumph, coming through the pack from his starting position In the rear to battle for first place with Marlon Metlock who took a second In the end on his 360cc Matco. Farther back In the pack Gary Howard and Burro Zollo were putting on a show for third, with Zollo passing Howard In the f1nal laps, to finish an evening packed with thrills and excitement.
