June 7, 1970- Atter a week ot hot weather the day was The four riders starting this event are visable evidence of the sparse rider turnout at this Washington race, last week. CONSIERRERE ,TOPS PROS AT CLOVIS HALF MILE By Btu Spencer CLOVIS, CA., June 13, 1970 - Paul Conslerrere cleaned bouse tonight by decisively beating all comers at the Clov1s Speedway 1/2 mile. His Norton led every lap and he had Uttle problem in outdistanc1rig second place "finisher Lloyd Houchins and a heavy field of Triumph. The race program Was run extremely tast to meet a 10 p.m. curfew and each main was a thrtuer with the near capacity crowd on their teet -tor most of the night. • Houchins garnered the pole position with the fastest heat race and Conslerrere was right next to him. Houchins was the tlrst one Into the corner but was second best coming out and Paul was never headed trom that point. Cl1tt Alsland and Russ Powell kept the scorers busy by changing third sPOt numerous times. Alsland put on the hard charge to stay out In tront and actually caught and passed Houchins, although only briefly. In the Amateur Main, Kris Bakke came trom tltth place to challenge Dave Bellina tor the lead. The t1n1sh was so close that a ruling by the referee was necessary with Bellina copping the win. No margin of victory was given and there was some conjecture about the t1n1sh. Bob Boaz led ott the 10-1ap altair but Bellina went by on the back stretch as did Nick Theroux and Harry Dring. Boaz and Bakke diced tor a tew laps and then Bakke got It on strong and passed into second on the yellow flag lap. He was in good position tor a pass coming out of turn one, but he sUd just a bit wide and lost his drive. He then picked It uP B;P1n In the last turn with the results ott1c1al. Modesto's Stan Anderson led the NovIce Main but was soon caught by tormer National Sportsman Cbamplon Paul Johnson and was relegated to second tor the . night. Johnson's r1g1d Bultaco certainly had the power as he was pul1lng away with every corner. However, Anderson never lost sight of him. The turn-out to this Bob Barkhlmer Associates promotion was good enough to have racing director Chuck Gululzzo put another on the calendar tor two weeks hence. (Results on page 22) cooler with some clouds, but this didn't seem to helP the turnout of riders or spectators. With only 95 riders turning out and only 300 spectators, It was a . bad day for Spokes. The races ran well even though the usual referee had to do the starting because the starter didn't show uP. He was nervous about the starting because he had never done It before. Fresh oU had been put on the track the day before the race and It was a Uttle sllck. In the Beginner's class, Roy Dowell (Ka w) went down hard just ott the startIng Une in the Semi but was all right and came back to take second in the B Main. In the 250cc B Main a chain reaction sent three men down. Dennie Duvall went down on the inside of the sweBPer and Ed Sinclair ran over him and threw himself ott over the handlebars of his hike and his own machine ran over hIm:Another ride!" sUd out and uP to Ed but he was not injured. Norm Hartwell (Yam.) went on to win the B Main when It was restarted. The rest of the races went ott as scheduled with no one else injured. (Results on page 22) Paul Conserriere was apparently biding his time at Ascot Friday night (where this picture was taken) waiting to travel North and grab the Clovis half-mi Ie Expert Main.
