I NICHOLS 4 FOR 12 AT 0.(.5. David'Tops At Illinois Short Track ORANGE COUNTY SPEEDWAY, June 3, 1970 - There seems to be someth1ng especially exciting about night races, and Orange County Speedway is no except1on. They offer both T.T. and short track and for those of you who have been regular spectators at the speedway races at Costa Mesa, I would ltke to suggest WednesdaY evening at O.C.S. for a different, but just as exciting eventng of motorcycle races. steve Nichols, #12, was the big winner of the evening, taIdng 4 of the 12 Main Events. Greg Wickam came out on top in two Mains, with Rob Morrison, Scott Smith, steve Thomas, PhU McDonald, Scott Autrey and Fred Timberlake each taIdng the checkered flag for a MlI1n Event win. With 12 Main Events it gives you an idea of just how much racing is accompl1shed in one evening. There's a lot of action and some tlgbt corners in the T.T. which produces some rather spectacular traffic jams. A fast short track, and a lot of good riders make O.C.S. an excellent place to spend a WednesdaY By Larry Shapiro SANTA FE SPEEDWAY, JlDle 4, 1970Motorcycling phenom David Aldana of Santa Ana, Caltfornta, in his tntttal Santa Fe Speedway appearance of 1970,brougbt back 'rem1n1scences of short-track k1ng Freddie Nix as Aldana walked away from the lo-rider f1e1d to win the 12lap feature race last Wednesday, June 3. The 20 year-old Talladega titleholder jumped into the lead off of the starting line and stretched his advantage to nearly a quarter-lap at the checkered flag. Robert Martin of Orchard Lake, Mich1gan, took second while Billy O'Brien settled for third. The w1nn1ng time was 2 minutes and 45.71 seconds. Aldana's win seemed so monotonously routine that one would suspect that he had been a long-time veteran of the famous Santa Fe Speedway quarter-mlle clay oval. Defending champion Nell Keen, who probably would ahve provided Aldana his staunchest competition, operated at about fifty per cent capacity after his rib injury at Missouri; the June 3 Santa Fe show was Nell'sftrstrtdestnce the mishap. Keen did set fast time (16.46) and f1n1shed third in a heat race, but he was eliminated in the semi-f1na1. In the Main Event, JIm Rice fell on lap f1ve in the fourth turn. He was running second at the time; however, the tumble put him out of the running although he did get back UP to COmPlete the race. Following the top threesome were Darrel Dovel of Decatur, Georgia, Rex Beauchamp out of Drayton Plaines, Michlgan, Walt Fulton from Hacienda Helgbts, Caltfornla, and Roger Reiman from Kewanee, Illtnois. In other races, Aldana and O'Brien captured semis. Heats were garnished by Aldana, Fulton and O'Brien. O'Brien an imPressive rider, coped the trophy dash in the stzzltng time of 51.22 seconds. - ntebt. , (Results on page 22) RACING STARTS AT BARSTOW By Blly Eldred Barstow SPeedway Racing's opening night was a success in spite of last minute problems.
