TRACK RECORD SET-AT CLACKAMAS,. ORE. By Don Carter CLACKAMAS, ORE. May 15, 1970-Last week' s rainout gave the fans two weeks to think about the exciting opener on May 1, and they were more than ready for a repeat of the r egular Friday night TT action at the nea rby Oregon Sidewinder's Race Track. And the heavy attendance jumped the purse to $1400, giving riders and track officials something to think about. Expert Glen Adams . (Norton), fr om Seattle, set a new track record ti me of 15:81. The heats and semis were not too spectacular and wer e run off without any pr oblems . By the time the Trophy Dashes started, riders and 'track cr ew realized there would be a large purse due to the crowd. Randy Scott ( Bul) had pole position In the Novice Dash - got a good scratch and held the lead to the finish, followed wheel to wheel by Gary Kapus , last r ace' s Dash winner. In the Amateur Trophy Dash, it was an easy Win for Chuck Joyner (Tri) . The excitement In this event was provided by Darrel Cotto n and Ed Herrmann both Tr iumph mounte d - s witchIng 2nd pos ition back and for th. The Expert Trophy Dash was won by Gary Davis (Tri) followed very closely by Adams. Jimmie Smith ,looked like he had this event In the bag until the next to last lap when his Triumph developed motor trouble and he had to pullout. In the Novice Main, Kapus took the lead off the line, followed very clos ely by Scott. Scott slipped by Kapus on the 1st lap, These 2 ran the next 8 laps so close together that you could throw a blank et over them - then' Kapus ' Kawasaki developed so me sort of trouble and he pulled out, leaving Randy free sailtng to the checker. The Ama teur Main had all the color of a top professional race. Joyner jumped out Into the lead, which he held for 4 laps, foll owed closely by Cotton. By the 5th lap things started to change. Cotton passed Joyner and Her mann moved up to 3rd from the back of the pack. These 3 held their positions until the 11th lap, when Ed s queezed past Chuck to grab second, only to be aced out at the checker by Joyner, as Cotto n won. his 1st Main this season. By the time the Exper t Main started, people wer e getting pretty excited; as they cheered ror r iders being announced at the start - the crowd seemed split between local favorite Davis , and Burres fans who did not see their' favo rite In action much last year, as he raced mostly up North. Adams squirted out Into the lead when the flag was dropped and held it for 10 crowd-screaming laps -with Davis and Burres In hot pursuit! On the 8th lap , Sonny squeezed past Davis on the straigh taway Into 2nd - and started challenging Adams for 1st. On the 11th lap, Burres turned the wick up and - with the fans on their feet - snuck past Adams into the lead and held it to the finish of the 15 lap event with a standing ovation from the estimated 2000 fans. -""',.. -.,.. ~~ "''';II''''l , ~, ":', . ,; »r- ~ ,\. :t) l ·..·•• -'fIIjl,. , • " cPJ,[;<;"j;;:. . ; . . ~.~ A Mont esa ri der find s a l ittle diffi c ulty w ith a sect ion at t he Northern Ca l i fornia Motocross Asso ci at ion T ri a ls held Sunday at B ig Ba si n, Cal i f . Bike Minded Parents Organize On AprU 23, 1970, a group of parents and other com munity-minded citizens formed a " Sta tement of IntentS and Purposes", and adopted the name "Citizens' Countil on Motor cycles" . It is the opinion of this group that the ' only logical approach to finding solutions to " cycle problems" is for the general public to accept the fact that motorcycles ' are here to stay. It is also feIt that it would be in the best Interests of the entire community to learn to accommodate them, as their numbers can expect to at least double In ten years. May 13, 1970- In a surprise announcement by Fil mways, Inc ., Sears Point International Raceway Is closing its gates. In an earlier announc ement, SPlR president, Craig Mur r ay, had announced a cut-back In construction and personnel. Then F11mways made the surprise decision to completely close it own as they had sustained a $300,000 .oss In their 10 months as owners. This decision was also based on the economic depression of their s tock. Sears Point was the site of a 125-mUe AMA National Road Race In Sept., 1969 which was well received by many even though it did lose money. A 1970 date had to be scrapped to Include a U.S.A.C. road race. The track is for sale at a reported $4 mUlion plus figure. Also, the possib1l1ty of leasing the track has been brought UP. Several inte r es ted buyers have been mentioned, although none by name . Most critics of the clo sing have decided that FUmways never had a chance of success due to improper balancing of racing and poor management. Perhaps the thing that the critics missed most on was the Intention of Fllmways to produce tums and commercials at the track and to lease out the fac1l1ty to other movie productions for the same. Much of the Paramount Production of " Big Halsey and Little Fauss" was shot there. The film should I be released . soon . Ja mes Garner and Cher okee Productions have spent time on the facility and with the r ecent ac cess to fresh water the enti r e SPlR facility would have taken on the air of a giant park with lakes, s treams , trees and grass. Hopefully the next owner s, if any, will continue on this line and with 736 acres available, there may even be a chance for a motorcycle scrambles or motocross course.
