After U two months of unusually poor weather the sun cam e out In full strength to dry up some of the ever-present mud and gave the large crowd of specta tor s a chance to catch up on their suntans . Th e fir st moto of the 125 class was domInated by Ken T adlock on a Bultaco, fighting off a strong cballenge by young Mike Budschat on a new Sachs 125 motocross . The two of them bad a substantial l ead over thlrd place Dan Nel son on another Bultaco. Thlspr ovedtobe the same order as their overall positions at the end. It was Canadian Bob Underhill out In front by a mUe when the dust cleared atter the start of the first 250 moto , He was super smooth and deceptively fa st as he stretch ed out a commanding l ead over the hotly-pur suing pack. Then, f r om out of nowhere, came Duane Omann, pushing his CZ to the limlt In a great Job of catch- up riding. Under h1ll f orgot to look over his shoulder as he headed up the l ong straight to the fInal turn and it was there that the fiylng Omann caught UP. Letting it all hang out, Omann blasted full speed through the r oughest part of the course In order to be on the inside of Underhill's Gr eeves at the fInal, r ight-hand turn and just squeaked by to take the checkered flag. In the second 250 moto Underhill got a bad start and by the time he wor ked his way through the traffi c, Omann bad built uP a sizeable lead f or himself. However, he dropped it on the last Iap , UnderhUl na11ed it all down In the thlrd moto by w1nn1ng aga10 ov er Omann f oll owed by Mike Welland on a Husky. The Big bore race r oared away as the riders Ilarreled down the long starting straight and funneled Into the tigbt and bumpy S-turn around the power Une pylons. George Wide made his 405 Husky go taster than the rest and won convincingly over Dave Ringle and Wayne Schuler (another Canadian) . Schuler couldn ' t get his CZ past Wise and thaUs how they f 1n1shed, with Doug Munson on a Montesa a strong thlrd• . With two f1r st Big George Wise seemed to cool it In the thlrd moto and came In thlrd behind Schuler and Ringel. These two really bad It out f or first place and the lead changed hands several times . At the drop of the checkered flag it was Schuler In f or a well-earned win and Ringel In second. Thls was good enough to give Schuler second spot overall behind Geor ge Wide, the overall winner.
