Renno was riding what appeared to be a 1966 class. The l25cc Amateur/Expert put on a or 1967 Husky and he knew how to make It go. Unfor tunately he rode it on its side fine show, also. Sod Buslers Open Ground For Scrambles By Bob Grant SANTEE, CALIF . May 10, 1970 - The Sod Busters M.C. held a benefit Hare Scrambles here today on a piece of pri- vate property used for the first time. The race course was approximately six- miles long, winding up through a box canyon, and included a very deep mud hole. There was a large turnout of riders and spectators, all of whom coughed up $1,00 admission fee for the benefit of the Santee Youth ASSOCiation. .. Nobody can pass up a chance to do a lillie erandslandlne. The 50d Busters drew as fine a crowd as Is usually seen at a Hare Scrambles. . But riders and spectators alike were treated to probably the best race held in District 38 for a long time. The Experts led things off, leaving in waves for twelve laps. Jaldng the lead on the first lap was Gene Fetty, onaHusky, follo wed closely by motocross star Pat DeBennedettl on an American Eagle. Close behind them were Scott Klng (5) on a Montesa and Bill Silverthorn (25) on a Husky. First 250 through was Frank Fisher (7L) on a Suzuki, sixth overall. On the third lap, DeBennedettl took over the lead from Fetty and Silverthorn moved into third, despite sliding out coming out of the mud hole. DeBennedettl continued to lead until the sixth lap whenhe was forced to retire with a broken frame . In - the meantime Stlverthorn moved past Ferry and took over the lead, and continued in front for the remainder of the race. Fetty was second and Curtis Smith came in third overall and firs t 250. Bob SUverthorn was firs t 125. After one false s tart the Open and 250 Novices took off on a shortened eight- lap race. Tak1ng the lead right off the line was Cec il ,Oswald on a Kawasaki, but coming around the first lap It was Jeff Baird on a Husky, first. Baird continued to lead unW the sixth lap, when Gary Bennet, also Husky mounted, took oVer and continued on to win overall. Baird was second overall and second Open, followed by Steve Silverthorn first 250 on a Husky, completing a sweep for the SUverthorn famlly. . . ••
