TEAM MOTOCROSS INTRODUCED IN NORTH JU MP with its totally blind ten foot verti- By Kevin Hill could almost swallow a bike and rider if the y tumb led down the fa ce. have bee n very successful racing all over Washington and on this day of Washing ton' s first team motocross they showed everyone tlie reason why. The Poullns made a perfect team for this kind of r ace and truly demoUshed the ir compe ti tion. Father Dick is 40 years old and has been racing for t1ttee n years. Young Ricky is only 16 now and has bee n racing for four years, and see ms to be getting faste r eve ry day. This Selah (near Ya kima) based fa ther - s on pair Winner s In the 200cc an d below division were Mike Claphan (Hodaka) and James Clayton (Ya maha) . They r anaway with the first moto but second place had a real fight between the tea ms of Wad klns/ Bos s en and CllttlBlume. May 3,1970- A new kind of motocross racing was Introduced to the northwest this Sunday at Daroga Park near Or ondo, in Eastern Washington. Daroga P ark, a pleasant campsite on the Columbia Rive r , was the scene of the fi r st team- style motoc r os s In the Northwest, where motocross .has caught on In a big way. There were two classes; 0-20Occ and 200-0pen. The riders were allowed to enter two bike s, one for ea ch r ider , or jus t one bike for the two of them , which very fe w of them did. There were 20 teams In the 11gbtweight class and 31 teams In the heavyweight for a total of 102 hard working participants. The fa ther and son team of Dick and Rick Poull n won the first Heavyweight moto convinc ingly and then went on to round uP the points in the next two motos also. . Ken Habeck an d Jack Ph1lUps road a pair of Huskies to second overall by virtue of placing right behind the Maico mounted Poulins in all three motos. With the first two motos already won it would seem natural for the PouUns to take it easy In the third moto and protect their overall pos ition. But when the flag fell, young Ricky rocketed through the pack to take over the, by now familiar, number one spot. This time they wer e chased really hard by Habec k/Ph1lllps. At one point there was a terrific duel when Ken Habeck came out of nowhere to pass Ricky, who looked a bit surprised but prompUy repassed. However, they weren't even on the same lap at the time. By this time the brutal course was beginning to take its toll on the r ider s and their equipment. Many a rider learned to dread the approach to the BIG BRUSH PRAIRIE OPENER . By N.A. W11llams BRUSH PRAIRIE, WASH. May 3, 1970-A crowd of 500 spectators watched the field of 130 r ider s that came out to the firs t race of the season here.
