The nation' s foremost speed way motorcycle r acers will be present for the season opener, including the new r ei gning National Champi on, Steve Bast of Van Nuys , Calif., the former cha mpion Rick Woods of Huntington Beach, Callt., and former Calltor nla State cham pion Sonny Nutter of Culver City, Calif. Speedway racing, starting Its second s eason at the Fai r grounds oval, is run on a near-clrcular dirt track forcing r iders to throw their fast, llghtweight cycles into a continuous sllde around the flat track. Each rider develops new and different techniques of riding generating tremendous competition for the fast, four lap races. April 19, 1970- With no desert racing in two weeks, a mammoth 813 riders were on band for the Antelope Rambler's M.C. here today . The banne r dropped, and , they were ott. After the dust had cleared, Whitey Martino on a Husky emerged as the init1a1 leader, with Rick Thorwaldson on a Rickman a close second. The two dueled throughout the forty mile loop, and coming into the first gas check Martino still had the lead, but Thorwaldson was only a few feet behind. Tom Poteet, the eventual winner, was running third. The t1rst loop was fast, with a lot of dusty trails. But the second loop consisted of a very rocky forty mlles, including a one hundred yard long rocky downhill. Thorwaldson and Martino were still going wheel to wheel, but lost the trail and didn't find the markers until the pack of riders had gotten by. At about that time, Thorwaldson suffered a flat tire and was out for the day. In the meantime, Poteet and his 250cc Bultaco had taken over the lead, but did not realize it until the race was over. Mint 400 winner Mike Patrick on his 250Cc Yamaha pulled in second, and Husky mounted Tom Smith was third overall and t1rst 50OCc. Tenth place t1n1sber Eric Jensen, riding a Sachs out of his Yamaha of Eagle Rock shop, took 125cc class honors. Doyal Fields was the Open class rider in on his Triumph. In the Novice class, John Knebel, racing for only the fourth time, took top honors, with Jack Morgan (Hodaka) carrying away the 100cc trophy. (Results on page 27) After four years of continuous use, the old motocross course at Pepperell, Mass., has been retired, and will be replaced on the same grounds with an entirely new circuit. The growth of the sport requires constant expansion and improvement of fac111ties to keep abreast of the needs of the sport. The new course w11l measure about 1- 1/4 miles in length, and will be so s ituated as to take advantage of the terrain available and still afford use of ail Spectator vantage points for viewing the events. A new starting Ilne area with a capacity for starting 50 riders abreast will be incorporated into the course. The new circuit will open on Apr1l26th when a full program of professional and sportsman motocross events will be scheduled.
