PERRIS TT R.UN UNDER LIGHTS PERRIS, CALIF ~ AprU 18,1970 - After ~ holding off on Saturday nights until the :c: weather warmed uP the Burtons plugged tr:l in the wrong llne and got a super cold ...:l evening to start things out. ~ Jim Clubb took the first race of the o night season as he won the 50-lOOcc tI:l By Elaine Novice class. Jim has been campalgnlng for a long time to win lb1s one and his perserverance paid off. Jess James Jr. Ron Foster. and Randy Hayes w~e second, third &nd fourth. Eric Arras, a sharple'm1n1-blke racer, pr.oved he could handle himself just , Deadman's Point Action Jones as well on a bigger macb1ne, as he ,won all three of his motes in the 100cc Novice class. Bob Weeks was second. The 125cc Novice Class saw Kay Kanakl, who bas turned into a real charger• lead the boys on a very merry chase, Second place Greg Brewer got close a COuPle of times but not close enough to itve Kay any trouble. Walt Foste r and Rick Doyle rounded out the field. Charles Soderstrom and Steve Nichols gave the crowd some thrills as they fought it out in the 100-125 Amateur=EJIPllrt class. Charles took it but all you can call it Is close as the down to the wire drives were something else again. Doug Mason was in there strong but his Baby Greenstreak d1dn·t have enough to \ keep uP with Charles' Bultaco or Steve's hot Yamaha. Doug did managetobeatone Yamaha so he came uP with third over fourth place Paul Lambert Jr. Toby Stanford who Is starting to look unbeatable did it again. as he won the 250cc Novice class, first division. Toby could have fallen down and gotten uP again without losing a spot, his lead was so great. John Carmello dldn't have It so easy but bad enough to nail down second place. Steve Brewer and Robert Stribllng rounded out the field. The second mght of 250cc Novices saw Dennis Creason not maldng m1stake one. Second place Mike Myersbadahard time keeping him in sight. Wouldyou belleve Dennis worries about talllng down and scratching his new paint Job? Tim Abshier nailed down third and Stu Cox got uP to get fourth. Doug Mason was n't about to take a back seat to anyone and proved It, as he swept the 250cc Amateur-EJIPllrt class. Rich ard Gann got home second and Chuck Tidwell, his second time on the new track, got uP to take third. Ken Lee, who bas been off a year, showed he hadn't lost his touch, as he rode the devil out of his Harley to take fourth. Gary Griffing has gotten into a rut, but it· s a first place rut, and it doesn't look llke anyone Is going to jar him out of it. C. Glenn Brunson seems to be the one destined to run second to Gary. Andy Skeel getting ready for Adelanto bad trouble banging on to the track without knobbles, but hung in there enough for third while the other half of the Grlfflng team, Roy, sewed uP fourth. The Perris track Is now back to the Saturday night schedule, and will also run Sundays unless a club Is sponsoring an event• • By Elaine Jones We start off on a sad note tbls week as we report the death of one of the uP and coming Green Platers; Ron Bourbonnais. Ron was one of the better 250cc riders at Perris and a gentleman on and off the track. All the riders join me In sending our deepest sympathy to the Bourbannais family. . Toby Stanford and Kay KanaId have got to be two riders who are going to be cbanglng the color of their plates before too long. Both these dudes have started out llke gangbusters tbls season and are really maklng sparks. Chuck Tidwell, who started his TT career last season, Is now sporting yellow plates as he got the word of his Amateur rating. Last year Chuck rode a 360cc Malco and a 250cc Yamaha but tbls year he bas opted for the 250cc and 400cc Malcos . Good Luck in your new class. sr••n platers Torsten Hallman Racing. Inc. Skip Gallager Is now dubbed "Good Time Charlle". Nobody bas so much fun at the races as he does. He doesn't give a hoot where he places just as long as he can get out there and ride and by the way he's no slouch in that department either. Bob Rudd Is another rider who shares Skip'S Ideas. He showed up with a street legal Honda and started maldng with the tape to make It racing legal. According to him If the bike was good enough to take second In the Elsinore Grand Prix it's good enough for Perris. He bad some thoughts about using his horn to scare the riders out of the WaY. Only one problem. He never got close enough to put the plan into operation. As he expounded on the virtues of the bike, I had the feellng he was trying to convince himself. Who knows, Bob, you might Just do It. Jim Clubb Is sporting a new baby Greenstreak. Last season Jim bad a Malco and " guess he decided to give the llttle bike a go. Both are doing all right as he took his class Saturday night. John M Is maldng all kinds of changes as he Is now working for FootbW Motorcycle In Upland. He Is also flnding himself on the other side of the racing scene as a tuner rather than a racer. HoPe he can balance out the two as he Is a colorful rider. John recruited some Eastern riders to give the Perris track a go and Bob Sullivan from Massachusetts said he llked It and would be back. The Burtons again have been given the word that their court date bas been set for AprU 29th, at nine o'clock in Riverside. Anyone wishing to come Is welcomed and it would be appreciated. The track Is becoming more and more popular with the riders and to this date no one bas been hurt. The ambulance moved once and by the time they got to the spot the rider was uP and fine . Grace Bur ton must be letting the safety of the track go to . her head as she forgot to order the ambulance for Saturday and the racers were held uP until she could get the man there• .
