~ ~ ci: ......Encinitas Win Goes ... ---------------------_ To Stlverthern tI) :l:: t.:I ~ By Bob Grant t.:I -J l.> :... ENCINITAS, CALIF . April 19, 1970- A l.> large turnout of about 240 riders greeted the Sagehopper' Hare Scrambles bere today. The five-mile course included sweepers and Jumps for the TT boys, a lot of tight, twesty turns and hoop-dedoos for the motocross gang, and even a small sand wash for the desert racers. The Experts started at 10: IS, with the Open, 250, and 100/125 classes going in waves at approximately one-minute intervals. The Sagehoppers use a unique starting method, where the rider straddles the front wheel and when the banner is dropped be must come around and start his bike. After one lap the trend was set for the Open class as Blll Silverthorn (Husky) took the lead, with Gene Fetty (Husky) second, both and Scott King coming up third on his Montesa. Silverthorn, going exceptionally fast, continued to lengthen his lead and bY the last lap had lapped most of the field. Fetty opened a good lead on King and both riders held their positions until the finish. The 250 class was won bY Cur tis f m1th on a CZ for the second week in a row. Second was taken bY Gary Drean, also on a CZ, who came from way back. The 125 class developed probably the best race of the day. Bob Silverthorn, Bill's brother, took the lead immediately on his rapid Sachs', with Lars Larson on a Penton close behind . The two continued to battle it out until the fifth lap when Larson took over for good, with Silverthorn fini shing second. The 100 class was taken bY Jack Hettinger on a Hodaka, After a short break the Open and 250 Novice classes blasted off with the Open class going. firs t. 1tfter two laps Jeff Baird on a 400 Husky took over the lead and led all the way to the fini sh. Due to the large turnout the 100 and 125 Novices raced together in a third race. Going ten laps on a tight five-mile course, this race finished rather late. But tfie wait must have agreed with Kevin Wolfe on a Penton, as he took the le,ad on the first lap and after ten dusty laps he was in the same position. ~ Just about all the leading district 38 Experts showed up and the ever increasing Novice classes necessitated a thir d race.
