Evergreen Speedway Motocross By Bob Laird Paul (9r) Cons.rrerl trl.s the outside on Dave (22)') Hans.n. Burres Best At San Jose By Bill Spencer SAN JOSE, April 19,1970- Sonny Burres tripped down from ,the rainy Oregon to grab the San Jose one-half mile opener, over a star studded field. Burres led off the 15 lap affair, but only through the first turn, where Lloyd Houchins got by on the outside. Dave Hansen, also moved on by to put Burres in third. Houchins held for five laps and was closely followed by Hansen unW lap four, when Hansen got in too close, and exited on the last turn. When he backed off, Burres and Cliff Aksland got by. Houchins started to move away, but on ~ 6, he bailed in the first turn. Burres was never headed from that point, although Ed Mulder moved up into second and was closing unW the last two laps. He held onto second wb1le Tom Rockwood moved into third. Always elequent Neal Keen, moved into the fourth spot on lap 8 but then balled off the track and called it a day. Burres had won his heat as had Houchins, so they were evenly matched. Houchins was only slightly faster by backing into the turns and coming out fast. Kris Bakke, jetted into the lead on the first lap of the Amateur Main and was never headed. Although the second place changed many times. Al Kenyon was second off the line but couldn't hold that spot, as Tod Sloane, and Harry Dring, both spent time in that number two spot. Sloane was the one that flnally finished there, although Dring'S Yamaha certalnly tried to hold on. Wheeler Gresham, took the fourth spot after finishing first in his heat. Sloane won his heat, with Bill Morgan close in on his new 750 Harley, sponsored bY Bob Self of Oakland. Bill suffered a shoulder Injury In the Main. The Novice affair was certainly different as there were ten quallfyIng heats, with the first two going to one of two heat races. Rob Hill won the first and Jim Halford copped the second. It was a different story in the Main, though, as Milen Vickers took home the checkered on his Bultaco. Les Costanza, led the eight lapper off, with Halford close In. AprU 12, 1970- The Everett Motorcycle Club presented a motocross at the Monroe race track, inside the perimeter of the race track. The course was well-marked with twins and ribbons. The course bad two small jumps, about 16" high, and a large jump over an eight foot wide creek. The riders had almost fifty feet of dry ground at the approach to the Jump, and there was also a small bridge for those who weren't so adventurous. Spectators with cameras were really taking advantage of this jump for action shots. The course was a true motocross with plenty of turns, mud and water. During the main moto, a heavy rain started, and there was some question of the course getting too muddy, but the riders wanted to contine, so the races went on. There were 117 riders at the event, and no complaints were heard from any of them. A few riders came after the quallfylng heats were run, and were too late to sign uP.
