Aprll 19, 1970 After Sunday' s motocross at Bay Mare, Gunnar Llndstrom (Husky) Is hereby nominated for Sportsman of the Year. In the 250Cc Expert, second moto, John DeSoto (C Z) , was the lead , when he suddenly crossed up on a down hill, hitting a stake, and crashing. Llnds trom, who had gotten a bad start and had been try1ng to pass for s everal lap s - slowed down to nearly a complete s top - (allowlng some r Iders to pass) and watched to s ee If DeSoto was all rI ght. He was, and was soon up again and racing . Gunnar went on to win the moto, with DeSoto second. In the first moto, John held Gunnar at bIke length lap after lap, unt1l the SwedIsh pro found the slot, takIng over the lead, and eventually the win. In the fInal moto the shaken and tired DeSoto steadlly lost ground, taking a second nearly 30 seconds behind Llndstrom, who was the overall winner. But John came back In the 500 Senior class, w1nn1ng all three motos, John RIce (Malco) - the graylng-but-not-soold veteran of the TT track - was second overall. In the second moto, RIce was run off the course, when newly made Amateur Larry Watkins (Mateo) and he had a coll1sIon . RIce came back In the final round to run second behlnd DeSoto. The 125cc Juniors are turning out, and what a show. The top three In DIv. I were D. York (Sachs), first; Ted Nor wak (Yam) second, and Sanders (Yam) thIrd. Norwak and Sanders were wheel to wheel nearly every race. DIvisIon II found brother B. Nowak (Yam) doing battle with J. Erwin (Sach). L. ConkUn (Am. Eagle) was given the win, however, with Erwin second and J. Betts third. In the 125cc Am-Ex. go, Amateur Uave Rogers (Bul) was swapping hubs with Larry Shoemaker (Yam) In all but the last moto, whenJ. Dawson (Yam) beat Larry out. DivisIon II went to A. Wurtzel, who carried off the last two motos going away. Luck Is often a factor In motocross - and it certalnly applIed In the 900 Junior division. J . Harter (CZ) led the field for several laps, but was zapped by Craig Cove (CZ), who In turn battled Mike Casper (Mateo), who In turn crashed. R. Hershey (Mateo) coole d It but stayed In there, takIng advantage of crashes and simply finding a hole. He ended up with second place, behind Craig Cove. Sidehacks were on hand, also, Sunday. RalPh WhItney (BSA) power ed his partner T . Cook lnto the winner's cIrle, easIly w1nn1ng the firs t moto, Dan Rowlan and partner P.
