~ story and Photos by Maureen Lee ~ mVINE, CALIF. March 15, 1970 - It's getting to be llke it wouldn't be a Southern Ca11fornla motocross without C,) a Bailey In it and tb1s Sunday was no ;>., exception. 1b1s t1.me it was Bobwbovery C,) nicely wrapped up the win In the 250 Senior and the 500' Sen10r on a pair of Malcos. Due to two other motocrosses running on the same day In dl!ferent locations the rider turn-out wasn't very good; only five 250 Seniors and six 500Seniors so the Juniors were put In with them but runnlng for their own trophles and there's no experience llke attempting to follow a Senior around a circuit. You either learn a lot or make your melon. First round of the 250 class went to Baney who started off In about fourth place with Chuck Lunde (C-Z) and De Benedetti (Am-Eagle) really scrapping away up front. Not enough can be said about Lunde who showed tremendous style and was very faSt but just couldn't keep up with the more experienced Baney, once Bob got lnto the lead. Lunde took the lead again In the second round but once more Baney got h1m and the same situation was repeated In the tblrd round. Steve Hammer on an AJS was always right in there and he really gets some good starts. Fred Cox on a C-Z was the first Junior followed by Fred Parker (Malco) and Shempel Yamazald (Yamaha). Everyone of the Juniors did well aga1n.st the Seniors and In every class more thin once there were Juniors ahead of the Senior riders for a wblle. Joe Ambrose brought. his Baja In for the win in the 100 class wblch had no Seniors at all. Bruce McDougalandBrad McKee both on Hodakas fought it out with Ambrose but it ended with McDougal second and John Volkman (Lobito) in the tblrd place and McKee, who had held the lead several t1.mes In fourth. The 125 class had the largest turnout, they were practically wall-to-wall on the starting line. Don Emler on an American Eagle was the Senior winner with Bultaco rider Mark Rick the first Junior followed in by Jim Culwell (Yamaha) and Tom Ralnes'{Penton) for tblrdmakingup a nice mixture of brands of machinery. The 500 was a hit of a c11tf hanger. Bailey had his hands full each round espec1aIly with JimO'Neal(C-Z),andgot off to a late start in the second round when he actually missed the start. Carl Cotton (Am. Eagle) was the second Senior ::l Specl.llzed Triumph - Hond. Rep.lrs • Custom R.clng • Engines ' M.chlne Work • Metlsse Kits Cyl. Boring '. Steve Rauch (C-Z) was the Junior winner followed by Tom Clodt (Malco) and Ed Pepelka (Montesa). Baney was all smIles afterwards 'even after the hard riding he'd put In, he knew he had to win that tblrd round after getting second to O'Neal' in the second but as before, each t1.me he got ahead he just pulled away from them and couldn't speak highly enough of his two machines.
