A.F.M. PRESENTS FIRST 1970 ROAD RACE ~ M EE'- ~ By Bruce Braly . EAST lRVINE, CAL. Mar. 15, 1970Despite the fact that the big road race of the year was taking place on the same day In Dayto~, the AF M and sunny skies drew a great turn out of flne riders and gr oovYrace mach1nery to Orange Co. Intl. Raceway thts Sunday. The Light weight Production machines were firs t to run. Jay Littleton came home firs t with his 250cc Suzuki for the overall win and first In his class. Charles Small finished second on a very quick Ducati and Dick Roll garnered the 200cc class honors on his Bultaco. In the Lightweight Grand Prix bikes fr om 50cc to 200cc co mpeted for the win In their respective classes. Charles Van Br ee men, on a Suzuki, was the victor In the 200cc Grand Prix category. Jay Littleton ca me through for his second win In his second race, thts time on a G.p . Brfdgestone, Jay came clear from oakland s o It must have been a very satisfying day for him . Butch Shepard . scored a second in this same class on his Honda that really made a beautiful sound. A Van Tech Yamaha ridden by Val Howard won the 125cc G.p . class and Chuck Clay don on his Kawasaki sc ored a ,win for hi mself In the lOOcc class. Ted Longwith was r ight in there with his 50cc Yamaha to take his class. Next up was the HeavYweight Production machlnes and It was a race just as its title Implled - heavYI Mike Wozln ok on a Nor ton Comman do was the early lea der. Th en, Hur ley Wllvert on a Honda "4" got around Mike to take the lead for a couple of laps. But, after a short ti me, Jack Simmons an d George Ker ker, both on 750 Nortons were able to get by Hurley with George tak1ng the win In his class besides the overall win for the race . These guys really pu t on a race, the spee d of these big bikes was amazlng. Butch Shepard scor ed the win In the 350cc class on his Honda with Francis Buzzelli taking second In the class with a Suzuki. Scott Autrey was the victor In the 250cc Grand Prix but not withou t a scrap fr om Mike Summers and Barry Provtsor, As usual, thts class was dominated by Yamahas. The 350ccGrand Prix began with a live engine start as ' did the previous race. This made for a very tightly bunched field to begfn the race and made for a closer race overall. James Chen was the start to finish leader with Pat Hyilan taking second, both were riding Yamahas. Third place was a close race all the way with Alan Thompson f1~ tak1ng it over Shibley, both were Honda mounted. The 50Occ-1000cc Grand Prix was again a one-two ' victory for Norton. This time though Simmons took first and Kerker was second. Hurley Wllvertagain f1n1shed third on the Honda "4". That Mr. Simmons is some rider to watch. Dave Dameron and Cecll Oswaldf1n1shed one- two In the 500cc category. Both were ridlng Kawasakis. And, a good old Norton Manx came In third - an, time marches on. The last race of the day was the one everybody loves, the Sidecars I Talk about some wild r fdlng; these guys really put on a show. They get their rigs hung out to where it looks llke they will never be able to recover, but they (almost) always do. Dean Hummer and Ralon Gulbranson were home first on their immaculate Harley XLCH powered r ig, all done up In competition orange. Doug Blngham and his unidentified passenger were second on their Triumph powered chair , The BSA machlne of Joe Heith and Dan Miller scored a third.
