J.N. Passes Poteet Fo.r Desert Victory By Dick Wright RED MOUNTAIN, CALIF. March 15, 1970 - Tom Poteet grabbed an early lead, as the smoke bomb was dropped precisely on time Sunday at the Sandblasters M.C. Hare and Hound. The five mile race for the smoke was fast, and Poteet and his red Bultaeo held Montesa and J .N. Roberts on his Husky. The first forty mile loop had a few hills and quite a few rocks, but Roberts - who managed to wrangle Into the lead - took less than an hour to get around. Poteet was now second. . The word is out that many riders used the fire road next to the starting area. l! so, they will be disqualifed, as they were told this was a "no-no" at the riders meeting. And, If they were caught, a couple of riders In the top ten could go the disqualification route. The second loop had a very tough hill that ran almost straight UP. But it apparently didn't affect Roberts, as he • pulled Into the winner's circle with a "good lead over the second man, Tom Poteet. Howard Utsey was third on a CZ, and Bruce Dunford was fourth. Larry Bergquist, the second place finisher In the 250cc class, said the course was "the best I have " idden In r some time. It was fast, which I liked." Ron Wilson was the first Amateur In on a Husky, and David Wllllams took first In the 250cc Amateur class on a Yamaha. Sam Dempsey took Open class honors on a Triumph, followed by Sachs Erick Jenson, who took first In the 125cc class. Larry Green was the first Novice In on a 250cc Yamaha, and Ed Segler took second In this class on his Yamaha. Ken Buckspan led the 100cc class to the smoke on his Hodaka, as Doug Sharp was second, and Mitch Mayls third. Buckspan still had the lead coming Into the pits, but Jack Morgan had moved up close behind. At the finish line, it was Morgan by about five minutes over Buckspan, who finished second on a flat tire. Jan Drake was third on a Hodaka, and Jack Froelich brought his Bultaco in for a fourth.
