BOX 98 GARDENA, CALIF. 90247 GARDENA, CAL., Mar. 1, 1970 - Sldp Van Leeuwen celebrated a happy 5th today as he ripped off the lion'S shareof a $3660 purse up for grabs 10 the Annual 100 Lap T.T,SteeplechaseatAscotPark. Van Leeuwen thus becomes far and away the w1nningest rider 10 the event's history, having previously won 10 '63, ' 67, '68 and '69. Triumph motorcycles have an even more defloite edge on the competition, belog undefeated 10 the entire 10 years span of the series. Predictably enough, then, it was Triumph that ran off with the top time trophy. Paul Bostrom, rldlog a Bonneville for Custom Engloeerlog out of Bakersfield, whistled through the traps at a cool 49:40 to earn the pole position. The first Semi saw Mike Konle gun his Triumph Into a lead that he refused to rellngqulsh for the next 10 laps. Jimmy Raymond, aboard a 360cc Montesa Cappra dogged his heels for a while, but eventually slipped back to 5th. Al Kenyon got the nod 10 the last Semi: running a way from Jim Ashmore and Dave Bellina, who accounted for the other transfer spots. Pole-sitter Bostrom, who finished 2nd to Jim Rice at the Astrodcome TT last month, elected to take the outside slot 10 the front row for the 100 Iapper; This put super-quick Amateur John Hateley on the Inside with Bob Bailey sandwlcbed 10 between. As the roar of 66 screaming pistons rent the smog-laden air of Ascot, over . 4000 naked eye-balls watched Lloyd Houch1ns jump from the 2nd row and beat the crowd Into the 1st turn. Bostrom was 10 2nd, followed by TT perennial Eddie Muler and SIdp Van Leeuwen, who had shot up from 7th. Starting his drive, Van Leeuwen picked off Mulder and Bostrom, then set his sights on Houchins, Lloyd wasn't having any, and kept SIdp at bay for 3 laps before dropping to 2nd. Houchins gamely managed to repass, only to forfeit the lead to Van Leeuwen on the next-goround. Meanwhile National Champion Mert Lawwlll was steadily improving his position after starting way back 10 17th spot. . By the 17th lap the Sldpper was flying low. He had pulled out quite a lead on Houchins, Bostrom and Lawwlll and was starting to lap the tau-enders. On the 21st lap Mert, who had been ridlog an exceptionally smooth and stylish race, lost it 10 a big way on the only badly rutted corner 10 the course, and dropped many positions by the time he re-started. Bill Manley on a Norton moved up to claim the newly vacated 4th spot. Van Leeuwen kept up his terrific pace, making It all look almost effortless just dial on the correct amount of throttle and stick the proper foot out at the appropriate momere, If Houschins and Bostrom were running like the proverHodaka Mont..a MIoreye Ie5 0 Gr.... s KawasakI Wesf.ils'er Spor' C,~'e .
