Atter running nose-to-tail with Houchins for many laps, Bostrom moved UP to 2nd on the 42nd tour. Skip had pulled out such a lead, however, that Bostrom was coming over the jump at the exact same time that Van Leeuwen was halfway down the front straightl Ignition gremlins put Bostrom out on the 48th lap, leaving Houchins In 2nd again and Tom Rockwood, who had very patiently worked his way up from 12th place, In ard. By lap 78 Rockwood was becoming very serious about annexing 2nd place and Skip was beginning to pace himself. Houchins had his own Ideas about the 2nd place pay -oU, though, and it took To m all of 90 laps to make good his threat . About this time Eddie Mulder experienced engine troubled, and just to compound ma tters , a flat tire. Van Leeuwen almost l ost the whole shootin' match on lap 91 when Bob Haynes fe ll r i ght In front of him . Skip missed Hayn es, ste pped ott wi thout killin g the motor, picked it up again and split within a matter of seconds . Atter 100 laps it was Van L eeuwen, Rockwood, Houchins and Amateur Bob Ferro. Time for the even t was 1 hr.; 22 min. and 24: 42 sec .; ott Van Leeuwen's record time of 1 hr. 21 min. and 36: 77 sec ., set In 1967. Tuner Danny Macias had plenty to be proud of, since he was responsible for the preparation of both the 1st and 2nd place Triumphs.
