Scores Soar At Trials Reportand Photos by G.L. Barton RIVERSIDE, CAL . Jan. 11, 1970- Trials maestro Sammy Miller once remarked tha t for a trials to be considered good, the winner should lose no less than 30 points. Since contests in England seldom have less than 20 s ec tions , I wondered how he'd llke riding only six sections and easily losing at least 30 marks. Although the day started out dry, a heavy rain soon began to fall . The rocky sections became sllck with the mud accumulated from the bike tires and the mud sections became deeper and more difficult. Section four for the Master and Expert entrants was r eally taking a toll of three and liYe marie losses with only two riders, Bob Nlc ke1sen (Bultaco) and Gary Davis (Penton/Trlals) able to get through with one potnt off. Both the lightweight and ultra-lightweight divisions were taken by two dedicated San Diego Trials Riders, Richard Bledsoe in the llghtweights and Vic Conaway in the ultra-llghts. Both riders are real enthusiasts and spend every free moment practicing their favorite sport. This dedication has paid off for both with Bledsoe topping second place L!UTy Giant racks we.. part at the sections at the Frakes by 29 points and Conawa y (Am. Eagle/Trlals) aceing runnerup Dora! Eckhardt by 31 marks. Derek Edgar of Scotland has extended his stay in the states, so that he might have a chance to compete in desert racing and trials. Derek again doubled up on Jack Ward's Bultaco to take the premiere award with 58 points but he just edged Bob Nichelsen (62 points. 8 cleans) and Gary Davis (62 pts, 4 cleans). Jack's bike got too much abuse though for both rear shocks collaps ed and they ended the contest on borrowed units, ironically from Nickelsen's machine, a perfect example of the comradeship of the TriaIers. Bill Whitman took his GreevesAngllan to his first wLn in the Expert division dropping 101 pts, and Bill Smith garnered second with 104 for Bultaco. Joe Goodson continues to take home trophies with his Monte sa but barely edged fellow Cota man Dewayne Blazer one clean to break a 106 pt . tie. Several youngs ter s rode five appropriately chosen sections and Sammy ' Parriott, son of long time racer BuddY Parriott, cleaned every one for a perfect score.
