Bay Mare Presents Photos and Story by Leonard Slpe MOORPART, CAL. Jan. 18, 1970 - The Bay Mare District 37 TT · Scrambles points event was presented by the Scramblers M.C. , the District's top motocross club. The 250 Novice class began with the largest mass of starters and ended with the most spectacular crash of the day. Afte r the ferocious start of the first moto, the two top riders In the class pulled ahead and took each other on In a determined manner. Allan Wur tz el, riding C- Z and sponsored by Cycle Products West, and Blll Payne, Yamaha, rode the closest set of races of the day. They were stlll giving and receiving no quarter right up to the end of the last moto. Just before the finish, Blll and Allen got tangled badly, with Blll Payne's Yamaha being fllpped In the air and crasb1ng through the wooden fence, sending four-by-fours everywhere and banging up Payne soundly i n the process. Wurtzel was knocked down hard also, but was able to get up and push his C- Z across the finish line to count In the standings and take the overall win. Second and third In the f1nal score were Gary Anderson (Bultaco) and Frank llaliano (C-Z). In the soo-to-open Amateur/EXpert class, Jimmy Stein, fresh trom a European motocross campaign, did a tremendous job on his new 400Cc Mateo , He was able to edge out Jim Connally who showed exceptional ablllty on an older model 360 Greeves. The 125 Novice class was wild and somewhat wooly. Mark Cook (Bultaco) displayed good form and took the first win from Craig Humber (Yamaha) and Chuck Berry (Sachs), the eventual winner. The second moto was also well contested between these three. In fact, so well contes ted that Humber and Cook spilled together at the rough section. They got back up and continued far down In the pack. That left Chuck Berry in the lead, with Mike Green (Yamaha) In second, bidding valiantly for the lead. But Mike got in trouble at the big steeplechase Jump and came down over backwards, and had the wind knocked out of him. That brought the Brothers Armstrong, Steve and Dan (Yamahas) Into second and third behind Chuck Berry's Sachs at the finish of the second moto. The last time around, Chuck was In second behind Mark Cook, applying heavy pressure, pushing for the lead. In the fifth lap, Chuck went out of shape and found himself tangled up In a wire fence . That brought our friend Craig Humber up Into second, and Steve and Dan Armstrong into third and fifth respectively. But Berry had accrued enough previous points to take the overall win In the 125 Novice class. Steve Armstrong, Mark Cook, Craig Humber and DanArmstrong followed In the final standings. In the 250 AmjExpert class, Gary Scott (Bullaco) and Dave Aldana (Ossa) presented .an other series of race-long fights for first place. In the first moto Scott took the lead trom Aldana and held on to the end of the six-lap race. Scott was able to do this all three motos and kept the Ossa rider In second. Third overall was Craig Cove on another Ossa. First In the 125 Expert class was Dirt Digger Jim Connally again, but not .without a hard go from Paul Lambert of Riverside. Connally (Bullaco) acquired two wins, Lambert (Yamaha) one win and a nlp-and-tuck second. Third overall, first Amateur, was Bert Severy (Thmaha) . . The 100 Am/Expert class began with a three-way .battle royal thaf Included Ron Powell (Kawasaki), Troy McKee (Hodaka), and I S- year-old Scott Sivadge (Kawasaki).
