Story by Terry Pratt Photos by Terry Pratt and Tom Culp APPLE VALLEY, CAL . Jan. 18, 1970-A few days of rain followed by a not quite sunny Sunday made 1970's first Deadman's Point motocross an ideal outing. All the regulars were there. The 'Wi1sfords, Frank Sr. and F.rank Jr. f1lled up first and second in their 100cc division, John Morris brought his Husky back for a .win in his 250cc race and Dave Smead outlasted the other 500Cc Juniors to get the brass in that class. Ray McCarty was there and took the win in the .500 Senior go around. Ray recently started motocrossing again after a semi-retirement but he looks as smooth as ever. As the word about the moist sand and many jumps at the Deadman's course gets around more new names are seen on the entry list each month. This time Mike Payse came out to give the 125 Div. 1 riders fits and Mike Bast was on hand to NEW GRAND PRIX ROAD RACER SIGNS WITH BULTACO A new name to watch tor duriug the 1970 World's Championship Road Races is Barry Sheene. , A native of London, and son of well known tuner, Frank Sheene, Barry has been racing just two seasons and shows great promise. He has signed on with Bultaco for the 1970 season and will contest Engllsh and Continental events on the very swltt 125 and 350Cc singles. Barry will team with New Zealander, Ginger Malloy, who will field a new 250 along with his works 125 and 350 Bultacos, get a second in the 250 Senior behind Ron M1ller. Mike bro~t his Ossa and Ron used a Husky for the win. A llttle face llftlng for the course goes on each month as the track is prepared for race day. This ' time a 180 degree turn was found at the end of the starting runway and ' a nasty . chlcane bottled everyone up before hitting the stralght . for the first time. The chicane was marked with f1ags and ropes and they were torn down just about every other race. Finally in one of the second 125 motos the leaders got the ropes, the flags and the stacks of tires marking the corner. l'he course _ crew grew tired of re-roping the turn at that time and did away with the sharp right-left. ' Because of an increasing entry list each month the course has been widened i n several places to allow more passing room and the overall effect is for a faster, more open track. However, there just is no way to take those heartstopping long jumps any faster than before so thp place remains the ·same old Deadman's Point.
