Jim WII son lifts it over one of the eraded sodlons. By Dick Wright BAY MARE. CALIF. July 20, 1969 The second day of the Grand Prix got under way at 9:00 a.m. The course had been watered down since dawn. and everybody was ready to do battle on the well laid out combination fast T.T. and rough hillside scrambles course of two and a half miles length. The 250 Amateurs were first up. The flag was dropped and the thirty five riders shot up the long straig\ltaway. First out of the turn' was Larry Shoemaker on a Bultaco. second was Rich Hall on a Bill Butler tuned Yamaha. These two riders got with it until Hall dropped his chain, and then Shoemaker outdistanced the pack and went on for thlil win. Competition was keen ill the 250 Expert go as Jim Wilson grabbed an early lead. with Gary Bailey on his rear tire pushing hard; both were Greeves mount'd. The hard charging Wilson was able to move away from Bailey halfway through the race and even slowed down for a quick cup of water, then went on for the win. Bailey was second and AI Baker, Yamaha mounted. was third. Tbere was a big group of 500 novices and the going was wild and wooly. but after all the mud was cleared off and the dust settled, Roger Flamin g on a Maico came across the finish line first with another Maico rider, Bobby Steffen moving up from dead last to second for a good ride. Jessy Goldberg r ode a consistent race to pick up the 500 Amateur win after Jim O'Neil was disqualified for riding the wrong size machine in the race. Dick Miller of the Checkers MC was second. The 500 Expert race was a family affair as big John Maynard took the lead after Baileyfell and Jim Wilson had a flat tire. Maynard held a good lead over younger brother Bob Maynard. They were hoth on American Jawa prepared CZs. The Comhined Novice. Amaieur and Expert Open class was a wild affair with Ron Rondell and Don MacDonald dueling for half the race. Back in the pack the young and wild Ron Jones who dropped it in the first tum and got up in last place, was now picking up places in big broadslides and fast straight away drives, on his Mike Birk tuned Triumph. He took over the lead from Rondell on the next to last lap and moved ahead to come in for the win and the cheers of h.is Antelope Ramblers M.C. club members. . The Side Hack race went to the team of. Ralph Whitney and his passenger George Whitney, on a BSA rig. Darrell Meter and Ken Meter were second on their Greeves hack. The Sweepstake race was the last Event of the day. The 100cc riders got a hundred yard advantage, with the 125's halfway back and all the 250 and up were back on the starting line. Bailey and Wilson moved uP quickly to take the the first two spots. Tbese two tigers put on a real show to cap off a great day of racing. Bailey was able to bold of.! Wilson and came in for the win. Wilson was right on his rear tire for second. John Maynard was third. The Simi Valley M.C. group put a first class Grand Prix. One of the things the riders liked was thllt the club kept their interest in mind. Then they divided the 100cc and 250cc Novices up into beats to keep the number on the starting line down. Also the loud speaker system was top notch. You always knew what was going on, so we look forward to their Grand Prix next year. C. tbrewan extremely well organ1zed two day Grand Prix on a clrcu1tlhat was probll.b1y the toughest oneyet. There was oneup-bUloff-camperaround a tree that became the downfall of many a rider. Once you lost momentum you'd just fiat bad it and would slide down and loto the brush. That sect10n reallY kept the spectators entertained! There was also a two-slage mud hole that was re-fUled several t1mes to keep the muck 10 sultably gooey condit1on. The 250 Novices led ott with two heats using the whole course wh1ch led right up to the top of the mounta1n and then descended down-bUl almost alongside the hill climb trail. After so many crashes and pile-ups 10 these two heats and the narrowness of the trail, B1ll Tucker of .the Compet1t1on Comm1ttee had a word with the host club and they ail wisely decided th1s sect10n should be taken out before there was an lojurY. 1f the right bulldozer bad shown up and ihe course been wider riders wouldn't have bad balf the trouble.
